Well, I thought 'For the Girl' would get rid of my feeling sorry for Sev, but obviously it hasn't worked. This one is even odder than the last and I'm really not sure about it. The first part in italics is a flashback, in case you can't work it out. Please tell me what you think of it and if it confused you horribly or not.
The voices were loud, even through the door. The Gryffindors had broken their tradition of common room parties and chosen a deserted classroom, giving him the opportunity to listen in.
"Right, Lils, heads you kiss me, tails I do whatever you want for five minutes. Up for it?"
That was Potter's voice; he would have known it anywhere. Full of confidence and arrogance, like Potter himself: so cocky and shallow.
A giggle. That wasn't Lily, he was sure.
"Okay, James. But Marly tosses the coin. Sirius'll cheat." How it hurt to hear her say his name. But she sounded happy. He should have been happy if she was, but he couldn't make himself smile.
An agreement from Black. Silence while the girl flipped the coin. Another voice, one he vaguely recognised as the McKinnon girl's.
"Heads!"
Laughter, cheering and catcalls. Footsteps. Silence. More cheering. He could work out what had happened. She had kissed him. Kissed Potter.
The party broke up soon afterwards and he stood back in the shadows as the Gryffindors stumbled past him towards their common room. He flinched as Lily walked past, giggling and arm in arm with Potter and Lupin.
When they had all gone he entered the classroom and sat on one of the desks. He put his head in his hands. He'd lost her forever to him, he was sure. He lifted his head. There was something small, round and silver on the floor. The coin.
He slid off the desk and picked up the coin. He looked at it, closely. He didn't know why he was interested in it, but he was. It seemed to be an ordinary sickle, but there was something odd about it. He soon realised. It had heads on both sides.
It was fixed. It was always fixed.
It was supposed to have happened like this, then, he thinks. She was supposed to kiss Potter that night. Black's fixed coin had predetermined that. Then maybe she was supposed to have fallen for Potter's ridiculous charms as well. She was supposed to marry him. Supposed to die for his child.
But it was her child too, he has to remind himself. He has to look after Potter's son for her sake.
Some things, he thinks, must be predetermined, like the outcome of Black's stupid coin. Some things are supposed to happen and can't be changed. Some things are fixed.
