Phoenix Cut

That day came around when Phoenix caught
Maya boring holes through his head in deep thought.
"Er... Maya?" Phoenix asked slowly.
She looked back at him as though his head was a guacamole.
"Yeah Nick?" she replied, her mind still thinking.
A smile spread on her face, but made Phoenix's mood start sinking.
"Why are you staring at my head like that?" he demanded.
And that's when Maya's smile expanded.
"Well, who WOULDN'T stare at the porcupine on your head!" she countered.
And at that, Phoenix's eyes immediately shot downward.

"But you were never as intrigued about my hair as you are now..." Phoenix stated.
Maya thought about what to say next; Phoenix waited.
Finally she opened her mouth to speak.
And self-conscious Phoenix, who didn't like talking about his hair, felt weak.
"When did you get that porcupine cut?" was what came out.
"It's been like this ever since I was a little kid..." But this caused Maya to doubt.
"What? You mean that's the way you hair is naturally?"
Phoenix bobbed his head up and down; Maya couldn't communicate verbally.
Finally, Maya burst and went on a wild rant.
Phoenix just watched and listened, his face nonchalant.

"I thought you had some deal with the barber!" she chanted.
Phoenix didn't know how that idea had been planted.
"I thought you had some sort of special 'Phoenix Cut' deal!"
"Remember that you THOUGHT..." Phoenix thought all this was surreal.
"Well, you only see hair like that in a video game!" Maya retorted.
And Phoenix's sight started to feel pretty distorted.
The two then finally got back to work.
"Is my hair really that weird-looking?" Phoenix thought with a smirk.
