Illusion

The endless dark corridors are nondescript and shadowed with hissing steam. The stench of burned flesh mixes with the acrid smell of welded metal. Grey wires and piping parallel the walls, ceiling to floor. The man is trying to find a way out, his echoing footsteps announcing his desperation. But each corridor looks the same and soon he is hopelessly lost. Now the steam begins to take a shape—a human shape. Slowly, slowly, the wires and pipes weave in and around the human--alien--thing. The man tries to run away and hide. His body does not obey. A red eye sends its blood-colored beam searching through the roiling mist. It finds him. The beam fills his eyes, blinding him. He feels a death-cold hand on his arm, pulling him toward the eye….

The man lying on the couch wakes with a gasp, warding off the ghostly hand, eyes wide. A data PADD rides his rapidly heaving chest, then falls to the floor. The man wills his eyes closed, then opens them again. His trembling hands wipe the beaded sweat from his forehead.

Slowly, the captain of the Enterprise sits up and reaches for the PADD. Moving cautiously to the easy chair, he carefully sits down. He deliberately looks around his quarters, then turns his attention to the PADD.

"I must have fallen asleep", he murmurs to no one.
