The Angel's lament.

The following inscription was found on a pedistal from which a solitary angel lays vigil in a Manhattan cemetery.

.

Bitterly do I envy you

all you creatures of flesh and bone,

free in body and movement

free from stares and stone.

All my envy turns to hatred

when you look in your lover's eyes,

for I'll never know that joy

so my spirit cries.

To look in the face of loved ones

Is a gift I will never keep,

In eternal loneliness

Bitterly I weep.
