Light slumped down on a chair in the headquarters of the Kira investigation taskforce. Only a few feet away, L was perched on a chair, his evil mind concucting ways to end Misa's life.
'I'll have to find a way to stop Misa from carrying out the killings like this...' Light thought to himself 'We could hide the Death Note and write on scraps... anything to get rid of any risk of her getting caught...'.
Light knew he wasn't the only person in the world who cared for Misa. There was also Rem. Rem would not stand for any harm coming to Misa. Just like Light, Rem held a deep love for Misa. She would even be willing to die for Misa. Yet, as Light soon noticed, this prominent figure who shared so many sentiments with him, was absent. Light got up, turning his head from side to side. She was no where. Why would she just disappear like this? He looked over to L, who's hands were hovering over his laptop monitor for whatever reason. He walked closer.
"Watari? Watari?" L repeated, to no avail. The screens suddenly flashed 'All Data Deleted'.
"All data deleted?" Matsuda asked.
"I asked Watari to delete all his data if something abnormal were to happen to him..." L uttered.
"Strange... you mean like..."
Light was in shock. It was a virtue that the evil hand of L, Watari, was gone but at what cost? Misa had never seen Watari's face. The only one who could have was Rem. But Watari was integral in exposing Misa. If Rem killed him, wouldn't the same fate that befell all shinigami to fall in love with humans kill her too? L seemed to think the same, concerning Watari's death that was, of course.
"Everyone, the shiniga-" he started.
But he did not finish. He groaned in agony, then fell from his seat. Light caught him but only to look down at him coldly. If what Light was thinking was true, L and Watari had indirectly killed Rem. Light wanted to go check on Rem as soon as possible. Each passing second felt like an eternity. Finally, L's eyes, fixated on Light's glare, shut. Light screamed out. It was not hard to fake distress at L's death. He was, after all, worried to death about Rem.
"The shinigami must have done this!" Light shouted "Watari, L, it'll kill us next!".
The task force members recoiled in horror. Light felt bad talking about Rem like she was a frightening being. She was motherly, caring... he couldn't stand the thought of her death any longer. He got to his feet, laying L to rest on the ground and marched out of the room.
"Come out, shinigami!" Light yelled to make his intentions clear. Perhaps she really would come out... perhaps she didn't die...
Things weren't that fortunate. Light found his way to a room with a conspicious amount of dust on the floor with a black notebook lying in it. Light slowly walked over to it and crouched down.
"Rem..." he hid the notebook on his person "I won't let this go to waste. I promise".
And that was what happened the day L, Watari and Rem had died, at least how Misa knew it.
"Rem..." Misa said sadly, looking down "She didn't need to do that just for me...".
"Make her proud, Misa" Light said, pulling Misa close to himself "The brighter we make the new world... the prouder she'll be of you..."
Light may not have had to have gone so far as to fabricate this story about Rem's absence. Of course, the reality was that Light had used Rem and coordinated her death himself. But Light had to make sure that he could use Misa too. Misa was close to Rem, so he couldn't risk her turning against him over Rem's death, no matter how small the risk was.
