Soooo… you all probably want to kill me because I haven't updated my other fics… but it's soooo not my fault! Okay I lied it is -- I will update hopefully soon. It's just a bout of laziness. At least I'm semi-honest. So here's my first one-shot!

Evergreen

He sealed the envelope carefully; to him it was an envelope filled with dreams of the past and nightmares of the present—to him it was an envelope of memories, memories of his first love. Placing it in the drawer he reminisced about her, his air, his world, his life.

He could remember the first time he had seen her; she was a breath of spring. Recalling the conversation on the topic, Hatori sighed.

"What does snow become when it melts?" it had been the first snowfall of the year and her eyes lit up with hope of the coming year.

"Water, of course" he had answered nonchalantly as if it were a simple common sense question.

"BEEP" she buzzed excitedly, "it becomes spring."

He had been amazed at her response to the question, amazed that such a simple answer, which was even simpler than his, could be so logical. He could evoke a memory so far in time, yet so close to him. He could still see her leaning against the shoji screens taking in the snowy white scene, the smell of the cool winter air and the awe of the snow's beauty. He could also remember the last time he had truly seen her, that fateful, dreary day when he erased her memory.

It was preordained that they would never be happy; destiny had them in its clutches and wouldn't let them go.

It was all coming back to him now, her silent tears gently staining the tatami mats.

Even the sky cried, as if it knew the inevitable sorrow.

"Don't worry. It'll all be over soon." He raised his hand to her head.

She looked at him eyes filled with conviction and yet regret, while he looked at her with eyes full of hope—for a better life without him.

Not once did he think of his own life, for his life revolved around her. He never thought that he would be the cause of her tears--of her anguish. He always promised himself that he would protect her but, this was not the case. He caused her pain; although she would forget the pain, in him it would always linger. Her cries, her weakening heart, and their potential happiness would always linger. Their happiness—he almost laughed, children of the Zodiac could never be happy; it was an incessant dream, one that could never come true.

He looked at the drawer, olive eyes full of disdain; the drawer held the face of his angel and his inner demon. She was his escape and his captive. She opened his heart to a place where he had only dreamed of—happiness; however she had also shut the door leaving him to face loneliness once again.

How could he ever escape? She was the key—the key to freedom. But now she was gone, married and happy; she probably never even thought of him; or did she? He recalled one cold winter day, a conversation between her and her friend.

"Tell me, what kind of man is he?"

"An honest man, when we're together it's so peaceful but, in terms of looks Hatori-san is more handsome. But my longing for him turned out to be only unrequited love."

Just hearing his name upon her lips brought him joy that day even, if it was only the last time. She had admitted that she had loved him although her memory was gone, her heart still remained. And even if she was no longer his, it made him love her even more because she had admitted her love, albeit unrequited love—love was still love. And his love for her would also remain unrequited, like a snowfall which would bring eventual life; their fate was unavoidable.

Hoped you liked it. Reviews would be nice but, being a masochist I prefer death threats. So threaten away!
