"How long have you known Jack?" Serena blurted out.
Nora turned from the bookcase and gazed steadily at the young woman, she took off her glasses and handed a book over to Serena. "That will help." She sat down at her desk and leant forward to watch Serena's expression. "I've known him a long time, why is something wrong?"
"No not particularly."
"Then have you heard something about him? Gossip perhaps about his tastes for his assistants." She smiled and leant back in her chair.
"No, quite the opposite actually, his tastes for his boss."
Nora almost choked. "Excuse me – you mean Jack and I."
"That's what they're saying."
"And that bothers you?"
"It bothers me if they're making up lies about you."
"Serena Jack and I have known each other for years, yes we once briefly dated but we soon found out we were better as friends. I need a relationship and he hates commitment so that was that. But we've never been bitter about it, we get on well that's all."
"I know."
"If they want to gossip let them."
"I don't want it to harm your reputation."
"I won't let it, believe me next week it will be somebody else everyone's laughing about." She smiled reassuringly and Serena got up from her seat. "Thanks for the book and the chat."
"Anytime. Are you leaving now?"
"Yes just need to get my things."
"I'll come down with you."
Nora stood slightly behind Serena in the lift and happily listened to her chatting on about the new flat she was moving into. She was a sweet girl. Nora took one hand from her briefcase and folded it behind her back. She felt Jack's fingers tangle with hers and squeeze them and she wished for a moment they were alone so she could kiss him. He let go as quickly as he'd touched her, always discreet, and they all exited the elevator. Jack offered to walk Serena to her car while Nora climbed into hers, she kissed the girl goodbye and made sure she squeezed her arm reassuringly. "Have a nice weekend." Serena said.
"Oh I will…" Nora looked over at a smiling Jack. "Believe me."
