A boy and a man sat alone in a temple.
The man spoke. "I don't want to go."
The boy inclined his head to one side and looked earnestly at the man.
"The river cannot flow wherever it will. It must run only where the land allows."
The man bowed his head and smiled mirthlessly, then spoke again.
"It was nice to see you again."
The boy smiled. "I found your company enjoyable, as well, father of my heart."
The man's eyes widened in surprise at these words. He stared disbelievingly at the boy.
The boy's smile grew. "A river cannot be joined by another and remain unchanged."
The man smiled back with a sheen of tears in his eyes. "Thank you, Shifu."
The boy bowed his head deeply and closed his eyes. "You are most welcome, Daniel Jackson."
When his eyes opened again, Shifu was alone.
Soon, Daniel Jackson would return to the path he had walked before, and Shifu would continue his own journey.
Their paths were divergent for now.
But Shifu knew that paths, like rivers, often wander.
They do not travel in straight lines.
And even those that set out in opposite directions eventually meet again.
