Harry watched in amusement as Dobby ironed a dirty old sock. It was an ugly thing. It was tattered and the color purple. Orange flower petals decorated it, making it even more unseemly. "So, what's the sock for?"

Dobby smiled widely. "Dobby be giving the sock as present to Winky."

Harry nodded. "Is it Winky's birthday?"

Dobby shook his head, focused on making the old sock look as pretty and presentable as possible.

"Then why are you giving her a present?"

Dobby looked at Harry with big tennis ball eyes and said simply, "I love her, and you give presents to people you love."

Harry laughed, feeling his heart warm at the idea of house elves falling in love. "Then I wish you the best of luck with Winky. She's a very lucky elf."

Winky was washing dishes, her ears drooping as she leaned over the sink.

"Winky looks very pretty today," Dobby announced proudly after he popped into the kitchen.

Winky looked up, big eyes showed her astonishment. "Winky thanks Dobby," she happily answered, stepping away from the large sink and all of the dirty dishes. "What can Winky do for Dobby? Does Dobby need something for the great Harry Potter?" She would never understand Dobby's fascination with the wizard, but she had learned to not argue against it, knowing it hurt Dobby if she fought against the notion that Harry Potter was a great wizard.

"No." He quickly shook his head. "This is for you." He held out the purple and orange sock.

Winky noticed it was dirty and old, but he obviously had done his best to make it look nice. In fact, it was the nicest present anyone had given her. Big tears came from her eyes. She held out her hand, and when he handed it to her, she hugged it against her quivering body. "Winky loves it."

Dobby jumped around the kitchen. "Dobby's happy! Dobby's very happy!"

"Winky's very happy, too!"
