Chapter 1
They had been among the few soul survivors. They had been lucky, but that was nothing new for Jaq and Fay. The two of them had been through a lot together since they had first met in an alley, but they had never been through this. She had seen when the guards had found Jaq only lying wounded, and despite him telling her to stay hidden for her own safety she had cried out when they had started to take him away, causing her to be found as well. Fay was lucky enough to have been put into the same cell Jaq had been thrown into. Neither could sleep as their trial day came closer to the surface. He watched over her as she at least tried to rest the night before their trial but it really was no use trying to; not when they were that close to a possible death.
"Jaq," she whispered to him as she glanced up slightly. He was leaning on the cell wall and holding her in his arms. "Jaq," she quietly called out to him once again. He looked at her, hiding the fear for the morning in his eyes. "I—I'm scared about tomorrow."
He sighed a little. He was as well, but he couldn't let her know that. "Don't worry Fay. No matter what happens we're going to be together always and to the end of time." He smiled a little hoping to ease her mind on what was to come in the next few hours. "I will always be here. I made you that promise the day we got married and it's still just as true today. Now rest my little French girl, you need it." He kissed her forehead and they both drifted to sleep, his arms around her almost like an angel.
Both awoke to the sound of the cell door opening and were dragged off to face the courts. The ultimate punishment would be public execution if found guilty of high treason. After almost a half hour their fate was decided; they had been found guilty and were sentenced to die by firing squad within the hour. Jaq held Fay close as she sobbed in his arms hearing the verdict. He could do nothing but hold her and comfort her, or at least try to with this news.
The time has passed by almost too fast and within what had almost felt like five minutes they were on the platform. He glanced over at her and could see her visibly shaking. They wanted nothing else but to hold each other for what they knew would be their last moments, but their hands were bound behind them. Two guards forced them onto their knees and gave off a few words to the crowd which had gathered to watch the last hope they thought they had for change in France be killed. Jaq and Fay looked at each other and tried to smile. "I'll see you again in a few minutes," he whispered to her. They heard the squad get order to fire and they both fell next to each other, hearing and seeing no more.
