Gales POV
"Heartbreak Warfare"
Gale:
It was hard on him too. No one realized that. Watching her fight for her life in the hell hole of an arena while he sat on the muddy floor on the Hob, seeing her distraught face as she laid white flowers on the corpse of that poor little girl from District 11. It tore him to shreds just thinking of the way the Gamemakers staged that fire to lead her directly to the Career Tributes… and that asshat Peeta Mellark, who for his part had played a convincing traitor, begging Cato to let him live so long as he guided them to the now legendary Girl on Fire.
He'd remembered the sleepless nights he had, thinking of her alone in the arena, grasping for a glimmer of hope in the death-filled prison. He wasn't happy when she found Peeta. He was injured, yet another burden to weigh her down if she was to truly become a Victor. Had it been him, he would've allowed fate to run its course and finish him off. He would've died from that stab wound or hunger had she not found him.
And then she risked her life for him, running to the feast to find medicine for his damn leg. Gale smiled a bit at that part. Katniss was a healer whether she wanted to admit it or not. She was just and honorable. She hated to see things suffer; even the animals that she hunted were cleanly shot between the eyes or through the head so they didn't have to go on in agony.
Gale wished that Peeta had just eaten those berries, instead of the red-head from five. That would've been a quick death; one Katniss wouldn't have had to witness. One that she wouldn't have needed to feel guilty about since there would have been no enemies to protect Peeta from, save for his own stupidity from having been born a bakers son and never having to go hungry.
And then they released the mutts. Katniss had always been quick, but the mutts were running in full force. Gale didn't know if she noticed but at a point one of the mutts muzzles was right on her neck, but then for some reason, he backed away. Of course. The Gamemakers had planned for it to end with Katniss and Peeta all along. Not so they would have a happy ending to theyre little love story, but so the audience could watch as the "star-crossed lovers" from District 12 were forced to kill each other. It was like a warped, perverse version of Romeo and Juliet. Katniss would be viewed as not only a Victor, but a hopeless damsel who had to kill her one true love.
And then Peeta got to live, and that's when Gale knew his fight was just beginning.
