I once had a dream
Filled with fear
Filled with pictures
And sounds to hear
In the middle of a field
Seven people there were
They didn't look human
But it was them for sure

First there was a puppy
All wriggling and warm
Like a fuzzball with a tongue
And roundish in form
She was so cheerful
It made me want to laugh
But then I felt a pang
And my tears gave her a bath
She had suffered much
But still she wriggled on
She continued to laugh
Though those she loved were gone

Next there was a hand
Delicate and fair
Long-fingered and aloof
Stating she didn't care
She knew the answers
And could do no wrong
I don't know why they liked her
Or even let her belong
She kept more secrets
Than ever before
But she was lonely
And wanted so much more
A friend to expose
All she wished to hide
And to make her confess
To all of her lies
But she needs something happy
To take away her shield
Of gloom and iciness
Something to make her yield

The next thing I saw
Is hard to describe
It was a laugh -
The kind that cannot hide
He knew sadness
It chased him all around
But he pushed it away
And cut it to the ground
He rolled it in a ball
And shoved it deep inside
To a dark, secret corner
Where all things mournful reside
And all the space left
In his heart so distilled
He turned into happiness
And with a laugh he filled

A pillar of stone
Standing proud and tall
A firm foundation
That will never fall
You wouldn't imagine
Or believe what you see
Isn't it strange
How soft a rock can be?
A cuddly, fuzzy thing
Who holds you in one arm
Who protects you from danger
And keeps you from harm
You want to rush to him
And scream with delight
When he appears
And banishes your fright

What next appeared
Was the ugliest by far
Big, brown, and lumpy
A twisted, mangled scar
He was the scar
Yet he hid behind it
And while it sat right there
He never seemed to find it
All his ugly past
Mirrored his broken skin
Yet the ugliness of the surface
Showed not the beauty within
A great heart unfolded
A deep sorrow and sadness
Covered up with a blessing
Of happy, golden gladness
Though he looked forbidding
He had plenty of friends
Filled with the undying love
The kind that never ends

These five images
Clustered around a pair
In which they found solace
That these two did share

The one was a flower
White-petalled and pristine
Like a winged angel
Like a glittering ice queen
She had a calm serenity
Centered in one man
She placed all her trust in him
The last of his clan
She cared for all
Who chanced upon her path
It was nigh impossible
To incur her wrath!
But she was sad
For flowers must wilt
But someone came to water her
And a stronghold he built

The other
Last and centermost
Was magnificent
And worthy of a boast
A burst of sunlight
Emerging from a cloud
Lighting up the flower
And seeming rather proud
He was the sunrise
And the noonday light
But he began to set
And then it was night
The darkness seemed sad
Even the stars were dim
But on the horizon there showed
A light - it was him!
He came back
To the joy of all
Then he travelled on
Never again to fall

And that is what I saw
That was how it ended
So is my story told
And my case defended
