AN: Yeah. I wrote Merlin fic. This is a thought-fic from Lancelot in 4x02, and spoilers for that episode. More like 3 drabbles than a story.
His Miracle
Lancelot had always heard the stories, the stories of the people who could control dragons. Back before all the badness had come into his life, he had believed in magic, and in the dragon lords. He saw them as wonderful people, the sort who would ride the wind on mighty wings, slashing down enemies with a slashing sword and a burst of fire.
But then the badness happened and he decided that no one could control dragons, they were too big and too dangerous.
He heard the scream of the D'rocca before Merlin's panicked shout, and started running even as the fire burst into life behind him. They were running, and he heard a low call from Merlin, something deep and primal and loud. He thought it outburst of magic, that in times of trouble, Merlin could only yell in a long forgotten language.
Merlin stopped shouting and the D'rocca kept screaming, and they both kept running. And then fire burst into the air behind them, warm and clean, and as the huge creature that could only be a dragon descended, he could only stand and gape. The sword was a reflex reaction, because the creature was bigger than him and that's what knights do, but he believed Merlin's reassurance.
Because dragon lords were real.
He thought of his promise to Gwen, to protect Arthur. If Arthur tried to step through the veil, then Lancelot would push him aside, for Gwen, and for his Prince.
But Arthur was down and Merlin was circling with that creature, talking to it. Barely even afraid, because when it came to magic, Merlin was the champion of them all. He knew what Merlin was planning to do.
He remembered the dragon's words. The world would be an emptier place without him. A dragon lord.
Dragon Lords were a miracle. They represented all that was good about magic and controlling the world around them. And Lancelot was a fool if he let that miracle, his miracle, go.
