Luna was having the time of her life at the Yule Ball. All through her short time at Hogwarts, she had never done anything special, or really fun, like the ball. She had always been the outcast. That was until she met Harry Potter by chance in a corridor.
Luna's bag had just split because of the Nargles playing tug of war with it, and she was hastily trying to clean it up until a black-haired wizard who needed no introduction came up and helped her. "Let me help you," Harry had said.
He casted a quick Reparo on her bag, then helped Luna gather all her stuff, and put it in said bag. "Thank you, Harry," Luna smiled.
"That's okay. Why did you bag break…— ahh, what is your name, sorry?" Harry asked looking embarrassed. He felt it un-gentlemanly to ask a lady for their name.
"Luna Lovegood. The nargles broke my bag-their quite mischievous creatures you see," Luna explained.
"Nargles? Are they a magical creature?" Harry asked, and the silver-haired teen nodded. "Tell me more." Something Harry had got from Hagrid was an interest in magical creatures: and it was useful stuff to know when you were entered into tournaments that made you face dragons.
Luna's eyes sparkled at that. Harry found himself being told everything you could want to know about Nargles; from them being black in colour, to their eating habits. In the end, a class about to start was the reason he got away.
They caught up quite a bit, just like that. Of course, Harry's friends didn't think much of Luna, but he didn't pay much attention to them because they were still in his bad books, for not believing he didn't put his name in the goblet. Luna said she apparently knew he hadn't done it.
When the announcement for the Yule Ball was made a week later, and Harry was told he had to take someone, he quickly ran through his options: he wanted to take someone he knew, so he could have a good time, and he wanted to be a fun outing rather than a date. Then it came to him! Luna! Being around her always seemed fun to him.
Luna was quite happy to go. Being a bit odd, no one else was going to take her, and being too young, without being asked she wouldn't get to go.
Despite the fact Luna was a didn't really care for her looks, she put in the effort for this occasion. The silver-haired witch wanted to look good for a once in a lifetime event, probably. So, she took the time to dress up, but at the time, she still looked completely natural.
The ball started with dinner, then went on for a dance. Harry stayed with Luna the whole time, and Luna found herself having a very good time with the black-haired boy, and vice versa.
When they decided to go for a stroll outside, Harry said to Luna, pulling out a felt bag, "This is a thank you present for coming with me tonight."
"Thank you, Harry, but you didn't have to. It has been nice spending time with you, without the Nargles pestering me," Luna smiled, accepting it.
"I felt like I should give you something," Harry said going a bit red.
Luna opened the bag, and discovered a Thestral shaped pendant inside; perfect for her mother's silver chain! It warmed Luna's heart to know Harry remembered the chain and how she liked Thestrals. She had thought until now, someone remembering that was as likely as Moon Frogs appearing on earth.
"Thank you, it is so beautiful," Luna gasped, in a very un-Luna like manner.
"No problem Luna: it has an anti-theft charm on it so the nargles can't steal it," Harry said, breathing a sigh of relief. Neither knew currently, but that was a start with a long and beautiful relationship.
