Prologue
When she found out that he had left little pieces of himself in objects that were important in some aspect of history, she was intrigued. No one would want to destroy something that once belonged to Gordric Griffindor. It was very clever; very clever, indeed. So when she was told to destroy them, she was heartbroken.
She and Ron went to the entrance of the Chamber of Secrets to retrieve Basilisk fangs for the soul purpose of destroying those which she found so interesting. She found, as she positioned the venomous fang over Hufflepuffs' cup, that she couldn't destroy it. She simply couldn't. She didn't know why, but she couldn't find it in herself to destroy the piece of history. So, she didn't. Instead, she made a duplicate and drove the fang into that instead.
She didn't know that this was a fatal error. She was unaware of anything that could happen to her. This overlooked problem changed her life forever.
Although not necessarily in a bad way.
