A Demon Among Benders
I do not own Halo or Mass Avatar: TLA in anyway shape or form they belong to their respective owners.
For the last twenty one years the entire galaxy had remain in turmoil since Humanity had been forced to accept a simple hard truth, they weren't alone in the universe. It was a truth that many wished they could pretend wasn't true and just go back to how things were before they arrived, back to a simpler time when all the people of the UGE/UNSC ever had to worry about was the Insurrectionists.
That had all changed in 2525 when Humanity had made their first contact with an covenant of Extra-terrestrials that ironically identified themselves as the Covenant Empire; Though their first contact couldn't of gone any worse even if they had worked at it. There had been no peaceful introduction, no olive branch that had been extended between them, only a message. (1)
"Your destruction is the will of the Gods…and we are their instruments."
Since that day every day had been a constant struggle for Humanity to survive . Entire worlds that had taken decades, other even centuries to build from the ground up had either been melted or vaporised everything on the surface, including all life. Billions of lives had been lost that innocent men, women children and even babies, none had been spared from the Covenants genocidal campaign to wipe out all Human life.
The UNSC from the start were vastly outnumbered and fighting against a technological superior foe that had ships that dwarfed anything they possessed, more precise Slip-Space drives, Plasma Weaponry and even personal energy shields for many of their troops giving them added protection from the more primitive bullets.
However when moral was at its lowest after they lost more then they gained, they arrived, the Spartans. Humanities super soldier that drastically turned the tide of battled and forced the Covenant to feel something they had never had before…fear. It didn't take long for them to earn the moniker Demons, although there was only one Spartan that was referred to as The Demon.
But even then it wasn't enough to make a real impact in the war. Despite their fighting prowess and their mastery on the battlefield there had only been thirty three active Spartans by the time the war began, and that number lessened with each passing year. It was for that reason that the next generation of Spartans had been initiated.
The Spartan-III program.
Unlike their predecessors who had been selected because of their superior physical and mental attributes to other children their age, the III's would be vengeful orphans that had lost their families at the hands of the Covenant, there would be more of them but most notably they would all be expended.
Over the course of a decade six hundred Spartans had been selected and trained on the shield world of Onyx, and all of them barring a handful from both Alpha and Beta Company were still in active service.
The fortunate or unfortunate (depending on who you asked) ones that survived knew exactly what it was like lose everything that you had ever cherished, whether that be their biological family or the one they had gained on Onyx; it was for that reason that they often did everything that was physically possible to prevent it from happening to anyone else.
Unidentified Planet, 2546/91 AG
"Got anything?" A male voice seemingly asked themselves as they sat in the pilot seat of their personal Sahara-class heavy prowler that had been issued to him by his ONI handler the moment that he had graduated from Onyx.
He had recently completed his assignment that had been issued to him by his superior to eliminate an Insurrectionist Cell that had taken residence on a jungle planet that was located near the borders of the Orion Arm, far beyond UNSC/UGE control hence why nothing had been done to eliminate them before hand, and why they had gone unnoticed up until now.
It was on his way back that he had come across a planet that greatly resembled Earth, even Reach…or from what he heard. He had never visited either of them and doubted that he would be any time soon.
"I have, Ensign." The emotionless and empty tone of the Dumb A.I echoed throughout the cockpit." Scans indicated that there is indeed a Human presence on the planet below."
" UGE or Insurrectionists?" The black armoured super soldier interrupted, his eyes narrowing at the mention of the rebels that even as Humanity was slaughtered in the thousands with each passing month still actively bomb colonies, adding to the already growing list of casualties of war. If he had his way he'd wipe every single one of those traitors. Why did good men and women give their lives so filth like them could keep living?
"Neither."
" Come again?"
" You asked if theses Humans were UGE or Insurrectionists, and I can confirm to you that they're neither." The Dumb A.I clarified for the Beta Company survivor." From the rather basic scanners that the Prowlers has installed I can confirm that they're independent from both sides. In fact from what I can tell they haven't even progressed to the Industrial Era."
"So what're you saying?" Spartan-B312 quizzed the A.I.
"That we've just encountered a primitive civilization of Humans that have evolved independently from your own, Ensign." The A.I answered neutrally; the Spartan was positive that if she had an avatar then she'd of shrugged her shoulders." But with a few key differences."
" Such as?"
" Well for starters it appears that they possesses a form of magic."
" Magic?" The Spartan-III commando asked incredulously.
"I did say appears, Ensign." She responded to the super soldier." The most plausible reason for their abilities no doubt stems down to their biochemistry being more advanced or has evolved in a different way than your own. Its also possible that they're not even Humans, but rather Humanoid species."
"Hmm." The Spartan hummed as he processed everything the ship-bound A.I told him." Tell me more about this magic."
" I don't know much more then you, Ensign." The A.I confessed to her partner." But what I do know is that a select individuals seem to be able to bend the elements of fire, water and earth and weaponize it to use in leu of firearms. Those that can't seem to use bladed weapons for fighting."
" So they're an aggressive species?"
" And Humans aren't?" The A.I retorted earning a look from the Spartan." How many wars did your species wage against one another over the course of human history?"
" Touché." B312 conceded to that, even before the Covenant appeared the UNSC and the Insurrectionist were in a secret civil war with one another, they still were now if to a lesser degree but it was still going on, hence why Ackerson had him hunting INI's rather than Covenant. "Anything else?"
" From what I can tell, the entire planet seem to be in a sort of civil war. The ones that can use fire seem to conquered a fair amount of the planet, the ones that can manipulate water and earth seem to be working towards a similar goal of apposing them…as we speak the area that greatly resembles the South Pole on Earth is under attack." The A.I informed the super soldier, who sat up straighter in his seat at that.
"By those Fire…Benders?" He asked uncertainly, he was unsure what the correct term would be for them seeing as how he had never encountered them before.
" Affirmative." She acknowledged." They began their assault on the South Pole by shooting massive balls of flames at the mainland from their steam-powered cruiser…the kind that goes on the water." The A.I felt the need to point out that final part for her partner, the latter who looked conflicted as he stared down at the planet.
" Ensign? Will you be intervening?"
"…."
"Ensign?"
" Can you contact HIGHCOM?"
" Negative, Spartan. We're to far out to establish contact."
" Damn it!" The 6'9 super soldier muttered. This was a first contact scenario and he was certain that there were rules about this sort of thing….he just couldn't recall If there were laws that prevented him from protecting Humans from a different civilization.
" You're not expected to be back at Onyx for another seventy eight hours, Ensign. If you'd like to study this world in greater detail then I can add it to your report." The A.I proposed to her partner.
" Alright," The Spartan nodded slightly to the A.I's suggestion as he took control of the Prowler." Guess it couldn't hurt to check it out." He thought to himself as he powered up the ship and headed towards the replica of Earth.
Hell. A rather strong word and one that her parents wouldn't of approved of her using, but right now no other word sprang to mind to describe the state of her home. The once thriving and serene Southern Water Tribe, her home for her short eight years of life was nothing more than a distant memory. The merciless and unforgiving Fire Nation had invaded her home, killed her friends and fellow tribesmen, bombed their village and destroyed their homes. Many had valiantly or foolishly tried to fight back against the Fire Nation and defend their homes, but their attempts were in vain in the end as one by one they fell to the Fire Benders.
No matter how experienced or seasoned the warriors of the Tribe were they just couldn't contend with the swarm of Fire Benders that were better armed, better trained and outnumbered them ten to one. that didn't mean that they didn't fight with everything they had mind you, whatever they could use as a weapon they used. Swords, staffs, clubs, fishing spears, tools, boomerangs and even the fabric from their own robes to strangle their invaders, only to fall in the end. Unlike the Northern brethren they no longer had Water Benders of their own, not since the numerous Fire Nation raids had wiped out all the Benders.
The young girl could only shudder in fear as she watched her home and friends burnt to ashes by the Fire Benders, the only part that identified them as Human were their cruel eyes that showed no hint of remorse or shame in the slightest.
The girl in question was none other than Katara. She had long chocolate brown hair that flowed down her back alongside with matching loopies, bright azure blue eyes that had lost their usual twinkle of happiness, light brown skin and stood average height for her age. She was wearing a thick blur furred coat with a large hood with white fur around the side.
Currently the girl was frozen on the spot as she helplessly watched as a Fire Bender raced towards her with a sword aimed directly at her. No matter how she tried she couldn't get her legs to move. Accepting her fate she closed her eyes and pictured her mother's smiling face, her fathers warm smile, her younger brother stupid grins and her Gram Grams hugs.
CLANG!
Hearing the clanging sound right in front of her, the young girls eyes snapped open to gasp at the sight in front of her. It was like something out of Sokka's stupid story books about heroes protecting the weak.
The thing in front of her was covered in bulky black armour that covered them from head to toe, a strange black weapon that was somehow connected to their back without any kind of strap., and was even taller than her father. Leaning to the side her eyes widened to comical proportions as the armoured giant was blocking the blade of the sword with their forearm.
Standing directly in front of the little girl that was only a few year his junior, the Spartan-III narrowed his eyes at the Fire Bender before him. Killing an innocent child, a girl that was absolutely terrified and frozen on the spot….that piece of scum was no better then the Covenant in his eyes.
Shoving his arm forward a loud scraping sound caused the Bender to cringe as they were knocked back. Bringing up his other up he swung it around and clipped him across the face, knocking him to the ground. Taking the opportunity to grab the sword that had dropped onto the ground leaving an impression in the snow, he picked it up then using his augmented strength shoved it through their skull, killing them before they knew what had happened.
Removing the blade from the now lifeless body, the Ensign swiped away the blood and placed it on his back before turning around to look at the awed and shell-shocked girl and picked her up and began to get her away from the dead Fire Bender.
"You okay, Kid?" The Super Soldier asked gently as he briefly glanced down at the blue eyed girl.
"Y-yeah." She answered timidly as she stared up at the golden visor that revealed nothing but her own reflection.
"Why were you out here?" The Spartan quizzed the young girl as he used his free hand to grab the Magnum, aimed it before firing at the closest Bender and saving a member of the girls tribe in the process as the bullet went clean through their head….though the loud bang did make Katara scream.
"Sorry."
" It's okay." The brunette mumbled from his arm." I was looking for my dad, there's a man in the house with my mum.
His already ice cold heart hardened at that. He knew what it was like to watch to see you family slaughtered in front of you, the memory of his mother being impaled on that energy sword had haunted him for the last six years with it playing like a movie stuck on repeat. No, he refused to allow it to happen to anybody else, especially another child.
" Where's your mother?"
" In the house with the man, weren't you listening?!" Katara exclaimed to the super soldier who would've rolled his eyes, but that would've been rather uncharacteristic of him to do so.
" Where is your house?" The Spartan clarified for the brown haired girl.
" Oh," She mumbled as heat rushed to her cheeks. "Over there!" She added as she pointed over to the largest of the huts, obviously her family was of some renown, possibly even the leader of the village.
"Close your eyes and hang on tight." B312 instructed the girl in his arms who did as she was told." I will get your mother out of there….I promise." He said as reassuring as he could, thankfully the girl seemed to believe him as he saw her nod her head into his chest.
"Right, let's go!"
And cut! Well here is the first chapter of the Re-write of The Lone Wolf Of The Nations. Sorry for those that have been waiting a while but to be honest I really lost some of my drive for writing as of late. I spent so many of my days off of work trying to start a new story and even update stories but I just run out of ideas or start writing a chapter then a few hours into it I think it looks stupid and erase everything I do.
But enough about me.
Let me know what you think and I'll try to have the next chapter out soon.
Merry Christmas.
