What I like to pretend happened at the end of Crisis Unaverted.

The Art of Abandonment

"So, I spoke to Cate."

Silence.

"She was really upset."

"Yeah, well so am I." Lux sounded bitter, resentful. She was lying on her new bed in Baze's loft, her head turned away from him.

"Hey, you can't blame her for Tasha being taken away from you." He sits down on the edge of the bed. She can hear the bed groan as it tries to support his big frame.

She turns and sits up, her back leaning against the head board. "Why not Baze? Why can't I? It's not as if she doesn't have the room or the money." She can tell he's a little taken back by her sudden outburst. They both stay quiet for a while.

Baze is the first to speak, his voice is soft. "She's doing the best she can Lux."

"I know. It's just…I wanted this one thing. One thing Baze, and she couldn't give it to me." She says frustratedly.

"Lux…taking in another kid, that's a big decision.."

"-you were going to do it for me."

"I know, but remember, I am an over grown manchild." He says jokingly.

A small silence falls over them again and Baze's face turns a little more serious.

"Truthfully though, I didn't really think it through. And besides, you know I'd do anything for you."

"Exactly, and clearly Cate won't."

"Hey, that's not true - you know that." Baze says defensively. "And lets be honest, your timing wasn't great."

Lux sighs. "I know. But I didn't have a choice. The one thing I don't have is time Baze. Tash could be taken away from me any day now." She can feel a sense of urgency taking over her voice. It's that whole complex of abandonment and being alone. They go hand in hand, and she can't deal with losing Tasha. The only constant in a life full of change, confusion and unknowing. Her change. Her confusion. Her unknowing.

She doesn't trust Cate. She trusts Tasha. Cate abandoned her, so theoretically she could do it again. Tasha has never left her. They've been best friends since the day they met, fiercely inseparable. That was the difference. That was why she couldn't live without Tasha, and why she could so easily leave Cate, over and over.

Baze senses his daughter's change in mood and tries to calm her. "It's going to be okay. If she is moved, I'll drive you to see her whenever you want."

"It's a three hour drive…" Lux gives him a deadpan expression.

"Oh..well maybe not whenever." He gives her a sheepish grin. "But look, I'll tell you where I can drive you tomorrow."

She gives him a questioningly but suspicious glare.

"Cate's." He says simply.

Lux shakes her head.

"You have to sort this out with her. You can't keep running away every time you and Cate have a disagreement." Baze's voice has taken on a deeper more authoritative tone.

It's always weird when it does that. Lux looks up at him, a little surprised at his assertiveness.

"Not that I don't like having your company." He quips. Almost immediately changing the mood of the conversation again.

"Fine." She huffs, however a small smile finds its way onto her lips.

He kisses the top of her head. "Thanks kiddo. I'm off to bed, it's been a long day." His voice is laced with weariness.

"Night Baze."
