One Thousand Paper Cranes

"They say that if you fold up one thousand paper cranes, your most heartfelt wish will come true."

Once he remembered that, his hope was renewed.

Once I fold up one thousand cranes, I'll see you again, sister.

So he gathered all the paper he could and even insisted that his companions help him fold cranes. But they refused. Didn't they want to see her back too? Was he the only one who really cared?

So he kept on folding, in hope that he'll see his sister again soon.

But his companions kept on discouraging him. Why would they want to? They would want her back as well, so it's for the best, right?

"Stop, you're wearing yourself out. Rest and please stop this…"

"No! She'll come back! I'm sure of it! Because sister would never lie to me!"

After months, he had almost completed his set of cranes.

Just one more to go, and you'll be back with us.

He folded the paper over.

He closed his eyes and tried to make his wish so that even the heavens could feel it. Minutes passed. Nothing happened.

He opened his eyes a looked around, lost.

Where are you hiding? You said a wish would come true if I did all this, but nothing seems to have changed. But you should be here, right? So, please, wait for me…

He ran around, looking for any trace that his sister had come back. After days of searching, he finally realized the truth.

It won't come true. Why did you lie to me, why would you? I only wanted you to come back because it would make us all happy. Wouldn't you be happy seeing us again too? So why won't you come back…Martel…
