A Family
Joe popped a few waffles into the toaster and breathed out a sigh through his nose, taking a quick sip of his coffee afterward. The TV was on in the kitchen and he was feeling a tad bit drowsy. He had woken up about ten minutes ago and was now waiting for his family to wake up.
Joe's family consisted of his wife, Sara, his son, Cid, and his baby girl, Josephine. Shortly after Joe married Sara, Sara became pregnant with his child and, nine months later, little Josephine was born and Cid was gifted with a half-sister. Joe couldn't have been happier. Cid and Josephine got along very well.
"Joe?"
Joe removed his eyes from his coffee and put it on Cid who was entering the kitchen, rubbing his eyes sleepily. Joe gave a short smile and gestured for the boy to take a seat at the kitchen table. "You okay?" he questioned him. "Sleep alright?"
"I slept fine," Cid answered. As the years went by, Cid had become bigger and he no longer looked like a little baby like he did when Joe first met him, but he was still a boy. "What about you, Joe?"
"Same," responded Joe, removing the waffles from the toaster to find them burnt. He had left them in there too long, but he shrugged and dropped them onto a plate. "You hungry? I made waffles."
Cid eyed the black waffles on the plate and cringed. "Burnt waffles," he corrected the adult. "I don't want any. Why can't you wait until mom makes breakfast? Why do you always attempt to make it yourself? You know that you're a horrible cook."
Joe rolled his eyes, shrugging nonchalantly as he took another sip of his coffee, sighing right after.
"Remember that time you tried to make mom a cake for her birthday?" Cid reminded him, a grin of amusement playing on his lips. "When you took it out of the oven it didn't look like a cake at all! It looked like a monster!"
"Alright, alright," Joe breathed, sitting down at the table with his stepson. "I'll wait for Sara to get in here and make breakfast, sheesh."
Cid smiled. "Good."
"What's that about me?" Sara questioned, walking into the kitchen in her pajamas with her hair all messed up and wild. She had a little girl in her arms who was clinging to her and trying not to fall asleep.
"Good morning, mom!" Cid greeted his mother in a blithesome manner.
"Morning, kiddo," Sara greeted him back in a similar manner, shooting him a smile. She sauntered over to where Joe was sitting at and kissed the top of his head. "Husband."
"Wife," retorted Joe, grabbing her hand and kissing her palm. "Sleep okay?"
Sara nodded her head, handing over their daughter to him. "I slept just fine, but was annoyed when I didn't see you next to me when I woke up."
"Sorry," Joe apologized, taking their daughter from her. He cradled her in his arms, observing her sleepy face. "Hey, baby girl. You still sleepy, huh?"
"Sleepy…" Josephine sleepily slurred, head resting against her father's chest. "…tired."
Joe kissed her cheek and grinned. "Sleep then. I'll wake you up when breakfast is ready."
"So!" Cid caterwauled noisily. "What's for breakfast, mom? Joe burnt the waffles!"
"I can see that," Sara wrinkled her nose at the burnt waffles on the plate. "I'm glad he didn't attempt to cook anything else or the house would've burned down."
Joe cleared his throat. "Ahem. I'm right here, you know."
"I know," Sara laughed, shaking her head. "Anyway, we're having un-burnt waffles and eggs."
Cid snickered. "Un-burnt."
Sara chortled. "Un-burnt."
Joe shook his head at his wife and stepson, chuckling softly to himself as he hugged his baby girl close to his body. Yup, he sure did love his family.
