Petunias And Lilies

Chapter 1

Petunia and Lily Evans were best friends. They were sisters and meant the world to each other. Even at a young age, they cared greatly for one another. Everyone knew how close the Evans sisters were. Their parents couldn't be happier with their relationship. Everything was perfect for these two girls.

They always had a playmate and someone who would care about them. And it would surely stay that way, forever.

Lily woke up bright and early that morning, it was a special day. A sad day, but exciting nonetheless. It was Tuney's first day of school. She was leaving Lily to go learn.

Lily couldn't imagine why Tuney would rather go there instead of staying at home and playing all day. Petunia had tried to explain that she didn't have a choice, but Lily didn't understand.

Lily trudged downstairs and pulled herself up into her chair. Petunia was already eating her cereal, dressed in her school uniform.

"Are you excited Tuney?" Lily asked sadly.

"Yes!" she cried. "But I'm nervous too. I've never been to school before. What if they don't like me there?"

Lily smiled at her big sister, "There's nothing to not like about you!"

Petunia grinned, "Thanks Lily, you always say the best things".

The two girl sat and ate their breakfast in peace. The kitchen was silent except the muffled crunching of cornflakes. At promptly 6:45 the big yellow bus came for Petunia.

A single tear rolled down Lily's cheek.

"Don't leave me," Lily cried.

Petunia hugged her tightly, "I'll be back before you know it."

Giving her mum and dad a brief hug, Petunia skipped to the bus. With a final wave through the window, Petunia was gone.

Lily's mum led Lily back inside. Lily returned to her cornflakes but this time she was sad and alone.

Her mum noticed this and sat next to where she was sitting so quietly.

"Dear, what's wrong? You're never this quiet." her mum asked softly, it was true.

Usually Lily was a flaming ball of energy. Running, skipping, jumping, singing. Everywhere she went and everything she did, she was happy doing it. Cheerfully smiling and giggling. And now she looked so sad, sitting and eating her breakfast.

"She left me mummy. Tuney left me!" she wailed as tears began to roll down her cheeks.

"Aw sweetie, she'll be back soon! You know what? You can come pick her up with me and daddy this afternoon.

Lily smiled, tears still in her eyes. "Really?"

"Of course darling!"

Lily looked back down at her cereal and her smile faded again.

"What am I supposed to do til then?"

Her mum looked around. Spotting some crayons and paper she said, "Why don't you draw some pictures for her?"

Lily smiled. What a fantastic idea.

Meanwhile, Petunia was discovering that school wasn't so fun. They had just finished their math lesson and were starting on spelling now. She thought it'd be an easy day, since it was the first day, she was wrong. It was dreadfully boring. She'd much rather be at home with Lily playing dolls or something.

Lily.

Petunia began to wonder how her little sister was fairing. It killed her this morning to see her so upset. But she had to go to school. Mum said if she didn't, she'd be in trouble.

But Lily was bright. She'd find something to do.

But Petunia still wasn't happy. It was supposed to be her making her baby sister laugh and smile. Not her parents or anything else she might be doing. What if Lily made a new best friend? Lily was so talkative and loveable, it could easily happen. What if I lose my sister to some other kid? Petunia thought. That Snape kid lived down on Spinners End. And he was Lily's age! What if they became best friends? What if Lily for got about her?

No that wouldn't happen...right?

Thoughts of Lily stayed in her mind. She couldn't focus.

"Ahh, Miss–?" the teacher said staring at Petunia. The class sniggered.

"Evans, ma'am. Petunia Evans." she answered sheepishly.

"Yes, Miss Evans. Pay attention to my class please."

"Yes ma'am."

"Right," the teacher said. "Where were we? Yes, yes, what does c-a-t spell?"

"Cat." the class answered in unison.

Petunia sighed. It was going to be a long day.

Back at home, Lily had sat down at the kitchen with the crayons and paper that her mum pointed out earlier. She began to think about what she would draw Tuney. After a couple minutes of serious thought she came up with an idea. She drew a picture of her and Petunia together. It was fairly well drawn for a four year old.

It was simple. The girls in a heart with the words, "Best Friends Forever" written on top. It was obviously heartfelt.

"Petunia will love this!" he mum exclaimed when she saw the picture Lily had drawn.

Lily smiled proudly and sat down to draw another picture.

This one was of the big yellow bus that had taken Petunia from her. Petunia was waving from the window and Lily was in the background with a tear on her face.

After she had completed her second picture Lily began to grow tired. She decided it was time for a nap. She sneaked into Petunia's room and laid down on the floor. It helped her fall asleep. The small red-head dreamed of her sister coming home.

And when she woke up at one o'clock, she was bursting to see her again.

Lily's mum made lunch and told Lily to wait for 1:45. At that time they'd go get Petunia from the school.

The minutes took hours to pass by as Lily stared at the clock. But eventually 1:45 came and Lily eagerly ran to the car. Her mum and dad followed and got in the front of the car as Lily buckled herself up in the back.

They arrived at the school just as kids began pouring out of the doors.

Lily spotted Petunia immediately and ran out of the car (despite her parents' warning to stay in the car) and screamed, "Tuney!"

Petunia whirled around , finding the source of the call, and spread her arms open wide. Lily flew into her arms.

"I missed you Tuney" she said softly.

Petunia stroked her little sister's fiery hair and said, "I missed you too, but I'm back."

The girls walked back to the car and Lily showed Petunia her pictures and Petunia hugged her tightly.

"I love you Lily. And I always will."

Lily grinned, "I love you too".

It was no wonder why everyone thought the Evans sisters would be best friends forever.
