My Biggest Regret

Ever since we overthrew the Capitol, I have been here. District Two is alright. Nothing special, but with the country in tatters nothing is these days. I'm not alone though, Madge is always by my side.

I hear the door loudly creak as she walks in. She runs over and leaps into my arms. We sit near the fire for a while, her enclosed in my arms. I gently stroke her hair, as I watch the flames dance. "I love you Katniss! ". I know it's coming before I feel it, the slap and the pain in which it carries, travels from my cheek to my right eye.

Before I know it, I'm walking down the road , with only the dark of the night to comfort me. I meant to say Madge, honest. But Katniss came out instead. I think about her all the time! How has she been? How has Peeta been treating her? Did she go on to have kids?

I walk all the way to the hovercraft station. I fly it to District Twelve, knowing Madge probably never wants to see me again and I don't know anywhere else to go. I go to Katniss's old house and find it empty, so I make my way to Victor's Village.

I knock on her door, and here footsteps approaching it. The door opens and there stands a sixteen year old, Prim. She looks at me for only a moment, then throws herself at me and we fall to the ground.

"Gale! Gale! Where have you been! ", she pulls me inside and offers me some tea and cookies. "Where is your mother and Katniss? ", I ask looking beyond her to the spiral staircase, hoping to see her come down the stairs with her hair braided and a bow over her shoulder asking me to hunt with her. Then I remember it's almost midnight and she no longer needs to hunt. That's when I see Prim's face, tears steaming down her rosy cheeks. "Prim, what's wrong? ", I ask. She chokes back her sobs long enough to say two words. "She's dead. ", her words were barely audible, but I heard them loud and clear. Before she could say anything else I blacked is PeetaHo
