As he looked at her for the last time, he took his class ring off her cold, frozen fingers and with tears running down his cheeks, he looked at her face for the last time. He would love her until the end of time. He could and would never forget her. She had been his one, and only true love and nothing could stop the love he felt for her in his heart, not even death itself. As they closed her casket, lowered it into the ground, and covered it with dirt, he stood there with tears shining in his eyes he knew she wouldn't have him to cry.
Her parents looked at him with compassion in their eyes. They knew that he had been planning on proposing to her. He blamed himself for what had happened even though they didn't; he was supposed to pick her up from her friend's party but he had gotten stuck in traffic and couldn't come so she borrowed her friend's car to drive home. On the way home a drunk driver had barreled through a red light. They crashed and the sudden impact killed her instantly. The drunk driver survived without a scratch but he would be spending the rest of his life in prison, but even that did little to alleviate the sadness that had come down on him and her parents.
He knew her parents didn't blame him but that didn't stop him from blaming himself; when they graduated he would have asked her to marry him, her parents loved him and would have been overjoyed, his own parents weren't around that much so they didn't really matter. His dreams had been crushed with less than a week until graduation.
Her father came over to him and said, "There was nothing you could have done Spot, don't blame yourself mi hijo, you are part of our family now no matter what has happened. Come now we're leaving."
As he turned and left Spot looked at the headstone, it read:
Rosa Marie Sanchez
May you rest in peace
Beloved friend and daughter
February 19, 1989- May 22, 2007
He laid a single white rose and her would-be engagement ring that she would never get to wear next to the headstone and whispered to it words that he'd had engraved on her engagement ring,
"Voy amarte para siempre mi corazon."
Then he turned around and walked away with tears making a wet path down his cheeks.
