Summary: Light isn't omnipotent, as much as he likes to think he is. Sometimes, he gets things wrong.
He clutches his chest, and as his heart spasms in agony and his mind becomes vividly alive with panic he feels the horror dawn, crushing him to the floor with a pain worse than that of the heart attack.
Kira! he cries out in his mind because he has no breath left to speak, and also his voice is hoarse from praying. I didn't do it! I didn't kill him! I was—I was…
He continues to scream Kira's name into the empty silence, until death seizes hold of him and leaves his body frozen and twisted on the cell floor.
The pen is already scratching another name by the time the man dies.
Later on, the prison guards take his body out, and he is cremated in a quiet funeral, the air choked with shame and things left unsaid.
He must be guilty right—because Kira said so—
—Kira the righteous—
—the protector—
The man's widow bursts into tears and flees the scene. No one tries to stop her.
There's a small article in the newspapers tomorrow. Another Fifty Felled, it says. It doesn't mention the man's name, or the names of the others who died.
Light reads it and smiles, satisfied, basking in the glow of a job well done.
