A/N: So, this is my first songfic. I've used the lyrics of the song Nobody's Wife by Anouk, a Dutch singer. Hope you like it.
Nobody's Wife:
I'm sorry for the times that I made you scream
for the times that I killed your dreams
for the times that I made your whole world rumble
for the times that I made you cry
for the times that I told you lies
for the times that I watched and let you stumble
He'd given her his whole heart. All the love he had in him. And she'd turned her back on him.
He'd planned it all so well. She was the woman he'd marry, and the only woman he'd ever want to marry. Three kids, a house just outside the city and two dogs. He should have known better.
She just wasn't fit for him. She didn't share his dreams, but killed them instead to fulfil her own. She'd lied to him to get to her goal and ruined his world in the process, without knowing.
It's too bad, but that's me
what goes around comes around, you'll see
that I can carry the burden of pain
'cause it ain't the first time that a man goes insane
and when I spread my wings to embrace him for life
I'm suckin' out his love, 'cause I, I'll never be nobody's wife
She wasn't the bonding type. Never would be. She would just fly around from one man to another. Enjoy life with that lucky person for a moment and then move on. She'd done it with him too. Just when he thought things were getting serious, she broke up with him. Using rule #12 as an excuse, but he knew better. She'd never be anybody's wife, and most definitely not his.
I'm sorry for the times that I didn't come home
left you lyin' in that bed alone
was flyin' high in the sky when you needed my shoulder
you're like a stone hangin' round my neck, see
cut it loose before it breaks my back, see
I've gotta say what I feel before I grow older
I'm sorry but I ain't gonna change my ways
you know I've tried but I'm still the same
I've got to do it my own way
Even when they were still dating, he'd felt like he was a burden to her sometimes. Like he was suffocating her and that she just was too polite to tell him. Like he just wasn't fit for her.
She wasn't exactly the caring housewife. He'd lost count of all the times she didn't make it in time for a date, or didn't show up at all. He'd tried to hide the pain it caused him, but he didn't succeed all the time. He didn't want her to know how much she meant to him and how much power she had over him. It made him feel vulnerable.
She wasn't there when he particularly needed her. That didn't change after they stopped dating and just were friends. Like that time with the dog, or in Mexico, or… He'd also lost count of those times. She did things in her own way, and there was nobody that could make her change that. She'd never be anybody's wife.
It's too bad, but that's me
what goes around comes around, you'll see
that I can carry the burden of pain
'cause it ain't the first time that a man goes insane
and when I spread my wings to embrace him for life
I'm suckin' out his love, 'cause I, I'll never be nobody's wife
He still had to know, though. He couldn't go on forever without knowing. So he walked out of his apartment to his car, and drove to her house on the autopilot. He knew the way by heart, could find her with his eyes closed.
He rang the doorbell. It took a minute before she opened, all dressed up and ready to go to a party.
"You'll never be anybody's wife, will you, Abby?" he asked.
She looked at him with pity in his eyes. "I'm sorry, Tim," she said. "I've tried."
It's too bad, but that's me
what goes around comes around, you'll see
that I can carry the burden of pain
'cause it ain't the first time that a man goes insane
and when I spread my wings to embrace him for life
I'm suckin' out his love, 'cause I, I'll never be nobody's wife
