He was close, he could tell. The moment he had strived for for so long was finally within his grasp. Just another few twists…
"Ha!" The last piece clicked into place, and Abe felt his chest swell with a surge of triumph. He had done it! Six decades, most of a human's lifetime, but he had finally beaten it. He swam a little somersault out of pure joy.
Too bad no one else was awake to share his victory. It had been a long day, and a late night; even the cleaning lady had gone home. Perhaps he would leave it in the middle of the table for them to find. "Oh, that thing? Yes, it was a bit tricky, but once one gets the hang of it…"
He swam back and forth a few times, impatient. It had been a late night, yes, and a long hard day –but still, they wouldn't sleep in too late, would they? He glanced at the clock on the wall.
3:19 am.
Blast! How could he wait that long? Liz wouldn't be around for hours, Hellboy wouldn't get up before noon, of that he was sure, and Myers… well, he was a nice guy, but still, Red had been there when he got the thing. A Christmas present from Professor Broom, all those years ago… Something to keep him occupied when he couldn't sleep, the Professor had said.
And now he had solved it. Blast.
Now what was he going to do?
Abe took a last proud, regretful look at the Rubik's Cube in his hands. He sighed, and with a sudden, fluid motion, scrambled it beyond all hope of recovery.
He glanced at the clock again. 3:23 am on March 17, 2033. "Time to beat: six decades, four months, fourteen days…"
Abe drifted, content.
