Author's Note: Just a little rambling I did after watching Glee. I am definitely loving Mike and Tina.
Just a Normal Night
They'd been arguing a lot lately. But they'd been making up a lot lately.
Mike embraced his Asian-ness. Unfortunately, living in Lima and being on the jock parade made it hard to show it off. The guys in the football club would have butchered him alive if they found out that Mike could use chopsticks.
Then, he started dating Tina. And suddenly, it was ok to be Asian. It was ok to go out with your friends to eat dumplings and sushi and go out for karaoke.
And maybe, he got caught up in the excitement of the whole 'sharing my inner Asian-ness' with Tina that he forgot: they are living in Lima.
Then… there was the Artie thing. Well, it didn't use to be a thing, up to the last few weeks when he and Tina started arguing a lot.
It didn't bother him that much that they started talking a little bit more, after all, Artie and Tina had been friends for a long time before they started dating. What bothered him, though, was that when he told Tina he couldn't do the duet, she went to Artie.
She went to Artie! For a duet! Duets were like love songs! Well, most songs were about love. But she didn't have to ask Artie. She could have asked anyone else… like Kurt. At least Kurt wouldn't have ulterior motives to singing with Tina.
It was a real eye-opener. Mike had had girlfriends before. But their break ups had usually been mutual. This time around, Mike didn't want to lose his girlfriend. He enjoyed the time they spent together, hanging out and doing homework together.
After glee club had finished practicing for the day, Mike made his way to Tina and picked up her bag.
"You free tonight?" he asked with a smile.
Tina looked at Mike, her face unreadable. "What do you have planned?" she asked cautiously. "Cause I swear, if it's another night with your mum and dim sums, then I've got better things to do."
"No, I thought we could, you know, do something normal… like we could go to Bread Sticks?"
Tina blinked. That was totally unexpected. She knew Mike enjoyed his dumplings and steamed buns, hence why she always found herself making polite conversations with Mrs Chang. But, it had been exhausting lately, only doing the things that Mike enjoyed.
"Bread Sticks? Really?" she asked, a smile creeping onto her face. "Like a totally normal dinner at Bread Sticks?"
Mike grinned. It was true that he hadn't been paying attention to Tina's needs lately, but he was going to from now on.
"Yup, and then I thought if we had time after, we could go watch Inception at the cinemas lately. Apparently, it's really good. Tonight will be a normal date night. Dinner and movie," Mike replied, completely proud with the idea.
Tina smiled and hugged Mike. "Thanks," she whispered into his ear, before she stepped away. "And… I'm sorry for what happened in the library," she mumbled. "I really want this relationship to work so we need to start taking each other's feelings into consideration."
Mike nodded. He had been anticipating this conversation. Their problems couldn't be swept under the rug if they were going to work.
"Yeah, so from now on, we're going to have more normal dates. I've been enjoying the fact that we have so much in common and that you can actually talk to my parents without asking if my parents are related or something because we all have black hair that I haven't been paying attention to what you want. So we cool?"
"Yeah, we're cool," Tina replied with a kiss.
