"Are you looking for another girl, Scorpius?" Rose's timid voice woke him from his trance and he belatedly realized that he had been staring at a group of Ravenclaws for too long. He quickly averted his attention to the quaint figure sitting by him. The air of calm and ease that always surrounded her enveloped him.
"You know I'm not, Rose. I left that stupid notion behind a long time back" he sighed, turning back to his dinner. While it was true that he had dated too many girls in the past, he believed that he had grown out of it. It wasn't very difficult with NEWTs, Head-duties and Quidditch literally bogging him down. And every minute of his time that wasn't spent in one of those, was filled with the thoughts of the reticent girl beside him and the alarming rate at which his affection for her was growing.
"You never explained it, so I assumed…" she went silent, and Scorpius was left to wonder what she actually had thought about it.
"You assumed?" he asked, smiling at her. She only needed to be in his day to make it bright and cheerful.
"I thought you were…bored of all the attention you were getting" she admitted, looking at her now empty plate intently. She never looked him in the eye if she could avoid it which he thought was a pity, since they were the most enchanting shade of azure he had ever seen.
"That was part of it but the thing was…it occurred to me that I was going on a wild goose chase, you know? I wasn't getting anywhere with the serial dating thing. I knew I wasn't going to get committed or something. Why give someone hope when I'd only crush them in the end?"
She seemed to be contemplating his reasoning for a bit before she replied, "I suppose I see your point, sort of. But there has to be someone out there for you, right? How do you hope to find her if you don't look at all?"
"You know what they say. 'You'll know when it's her. If she's meant for you nothing can stop it' and all that" Scorpius sighed, looking away.
"Best of luck on finding her then" she left without a greeting, as always. Scorpius wondered if he would ever gather the courage to tell her the truth.
Probably not.
