Today was a day unlike any other. It was the period at the end of a chapter. It was the echo of a song's final lyric. It was the sizzle of a flame that burned so brightly for so long. It was the last day of summer before the school year started, but not just any school year–it was the last year of high school. It had to count for something. This last day before going into it had to count for something. The whole summer had counted–probably to one million if an actual value be placed on it–but this very day had to be infinite.
What better way to be infinite by spending the entire day beside a lake with the ones you grew close to, the ones you fell in love with, the ones you respected, the ones you were fascinated by?
This day was not to look back on fear and loathing. This day was for positive reflection, similar to the clear, crystal-blue waters the gang played like children by.
This day was for running through the trees in search of one to carve initials on. The one closest to the water now read JG & NW with a heart surrounding it. The kisses stolen near it made it all the more permanent. It made this summer of their crazy, gradual love permanent.
This day was for roaming around in bikinis and swim trunks, splashing the sparkling water of the lake at each other. Jude had to throw his beanie on the grass to prevent it from getting soaked any further. His messy blonde was quickly slicked with water afterwards, courtesy of his friends.
This day was for binging on food and sitting on a picnic blanket, laughing about stupid things that happened in June. Jonesy and Jude had plenty of those stories to tell, while Caitlin had love stories to share. Nikki threw a balled up napkin at Caitlin when she started getting too sentimental. Everybody laughed, even Caitlin herself. There was no reason to be mad. Everything was all in good fun.
This day was for giving good summer fun one last day of life. They all sat in the grass and watched the sky go from bright blue, to a blue-orange mixture, and finally to blue-black with scattered dots of white.
Tomorrow would be a day unlike any other. It was the first word of a new chapter. It was the first lyric in a song. It was a feisty flame roaring in various hues of orange and red and blue. It was the first day of a new year, one that had to count for something. The last day of summer, however, became infinite. This whole summer counted, but a day like this just lived on (through memories and words and stolen kisses) forever.
Infinitely.
A/N: This was just a drabble. I'll expand on this when the time comes. God bless The Perks of Being a Wallflower by the way. xoxo
