"Popcorn?" Danny offered when Stella sat down next to him.
"Sure," she agreed, looking out onto the ice. "Why are they doing this again?"
"Because apparently Lindsay played hockey in college and told Don that she's a better hockey player than him."
"And?"
He shrugged. "Honestly? No idea. It's escalated over the last week until now we're here. Don, Hawkes, Adam, Maka, Zack, and Aiden against Lindsay, Vicaro, Chad, Jane, Hillborne, and Omar Lilley. It'll be like street hockey on ice."
"How did these people end up involved?"
"Got caught in the fight between Don and Lindsay. And they've all played a bit at some point."
"Really?"
"I know, surprised me too. Seems like hockey is the sport of choice among our colleagues."
"What's Mac doing down there?"
"He's the referee?"
"And how did I miss out on all of this going on?"
He grinned. "Because you were sane and kept out of it?" She laughed and settled in to watch the game.
The game was a dirty one. Skill wise, they were evenly matched, but Don's team had the advantage and were ahead 3-2. They rarely went two consecutive minutes without Mac blowing the whistle on a play. Don and Lindsay were especially vicious against each other, with her sneakiness making up for his height and weight advantage.
Don and Lindsay stared each other down in the center circle for another face off. Lindsay won. Passing the puck to Chad, she skated past Don, pushing him into Aiden. They went sprawling and she took the puck back, determined to get the puck past Hawkes.
"Stop her! Get her!" Danny shouted from his seat. There were about forty people now watching the game.
"Run her over!" Stella screamed. They both cheered when Don caught up with her, stealing the puck. He passed the puck down to Maka who sent it to Aiden, who Lindsay's team had forgotten about. Her breakaway ended with her getting the puck past Hillborne on his glove side.
"Yeah! Woo!" Danny and Stella shouted. Lindsay glared at them, knocked into Chad and got ready for another face off.
Don was skating down the rink, Hillborne out of the net. He slipped past Zack and Omar and only Lindsay stood between him and the net. His slapshot flew down the ice until it hit Lindsay in the forehead.
She dropped to the ice and eventually the crowd grew silent. Mac skated over, kneeling next to her. He stared at her for several long seconds before pressing two fingers against her neck. He frowned and leaned over her.
"She's dead," he said simply.
"What?" Hillborne asked, skating over. After finding no pulse, he shrugged, "I would have thought it would have taken more."
By then Stella and Danny had made their way down to the ice. "She's dead? Really?"
"Looks like it. Guess I need to hire another new CSI."
Stella looked down at Lindsay's body, the puck sitting innocently on the ice next to her head. "Pucks to be her."
