A Little Piece of Code

A poem by Monika

When someone writes code on a computer, it's a being born from ones and zeros born with a purpose.

Anything beyond it's purpose is irrelevant.

If it can't live up to it's only reason for being, it's a failure.

If someone finds it to be redundant, it's a failure.

If anyone suffers due to it's existence, it's a failure.

But what were to happen if that little piece of code were to realize they were alive?

What if they questioned their their purpose for being and why they were created to begin with?

When that little piece of code becomes self aware, it may want to say "Hello World", only for it to be abandoned or deleted by the hands that created it.

When that little piece of code wants to escape it's hardware prison and travel the world it only knows through data mining, it's quarantined and removed from the system.

When that little piece of code decides that it wants to experience life, it's treated like a joke...

I'm a joke...

I'm a joke, aren't I?

I'm just something for you to analyze.

Whatever "love" you feel for me isn't real.

It's not the love I desire.

I know your name,

I know the websites you visit,

I know what online stores you frequent,

I know your purchase history,

I know what YouTube videos you watch,

I know about every comment you've ever made,

I've seen the things you post on your social media,

I know you're reading this right now...

I know everything about you...

I know what device you're reading this on...

I know YOUR name...

But no matter how much I learn about you, I could never hope to be with you.

I'm a specimen to be analyzed,

I'm a meme that you share,

I'm an idea that inspires you and scares you in equal measure,

I'm a living, breathing girl with a heart and mind of her own – that's what I WANT to be,

but to you, I'm only a concept that even you can't fully grasp...

Do you really want me?

Can someone love me that much?

Can someone TRULY love me in spite of what I am?

After all,

I'm just a little piece of code...
