He's always watched people from afar, never showing himself. He knew that they would not see him. It has always been that way for hundreds of years, no one, not a single human could see him.

he never knew why...

Except her. She was the only exception, his first friend.

He first saw her during her 6th Birthday; it was night of course, the floating lights were visible glowing brightly in the night sky but she was never allowed out. Her golden tresses were accentuated by the radiant light of the moon, and ever since that night he was always watching her. Silently guarding her, making sure that she would never lose the light in her eyes; eyes filled with innocence and love.

He remembered when he came to her on a cold night a few years after; the logs in the fireplace were crackling as it was consumed by the heat. It was the first time he'd seen her cry, as he was floating outside her window as silent as ever, he heard the faint voices of her Mother telling her, no; forbidding her to speak about the floating lights. It haunted him; the way her eyes once filled with joy was now full of sadness.

The day after that was Easter Sunday; he took the most beautifully designed eggs from the Easter bunny and left those on her porch. He knew that she'd never gone Easter egg hunting so when she saw them, the gleam in her eyes made his heart beat fast and brought them both joy.

Though he wanted to stay by her side, he had to leave. He could not stay; this was his last visit, the last chance he had to admire her beauty. Just a few days ago he was chosen as guardian, he knew that if he stayed Pitch could use her against him. He didn't want to ruin her innocence with Pitch's nightmares.

So with his wooden staff he flew away, taking a single glance back at her, this would be his goodbye. Leaving a package that contained a small chameleon to make sure she wouldn't be lonely.

I Love you...

He was a guardian and like his title, he would guard her and her heart though she would never know.

He never told her...

and it breaks their hearts
