Tears

[Fandom]: Elfen Lied

The black mist hung heavy in the air. Lucy could not see through it. It was too dark. Much too dark …

She wandered aimlessly, an unusual fear gripping her. She felt fingers brush her face, but when she tried to reach up and swat them away, she found that she couldn't. She couldn't move her hands. She couldn't turn her head. She could only wander.

The fingers were heavier now, not as wispy. She felt them trailing down her face toward her neck. Some of the fingers traveled into her mouth. They were strangely salty.

It took Lucy a moment to realize that the dark fingers were not actually fingers. They were …

Tears.

They were tears.

Lucy didn't struggle to wipe them away, because she knew her efforts were futile. Some part of her told her that it was all hopeless. Why wipe away the tears? Why should she? It was all hopeless, hopeless anyway. It didn't matter. Why do anything? Why continue living? She was only a nuisance. Always a nuisance. She got in the way.

She hurt people.

She hurt people. The thought resonated more clearly than the rest.

The tears fells from her face and dripped down her neck and pooled in her mouth. They were thick and slow, like blood.

Blood.

Tears.

Tears on her face.

Blood on her hands.

She hurt people. Lucy was a murderer.

"Nyu?" a voice called to her. "Nyu? Are you there?"

Lucy spun slowly around in the darkness to find Kohta standing there, his blue eyes worried. "Kohta …" she murmured, her voice hoarse and slow.

None of it matters anymore.

"Nyu?" Kohta blinked. "I'm here, Nyu."

"Oh, Kohta …" More blood-tears slid down Lucy's face.

"Nyu? Nyu? Wake up!"

Lucy snapped awake and her eyes flew open. Kohta, who had been shaking her, leapt backwards, surprised.

"Nyu!" Kohta exclaimed, worried. "What's wrong? You were having a nightmare. Oh, you're crying …"

"Crying?" Lucy murmured, not taking her eyes away from Kohta's as she reached up to touch the tears still falling from her eyes. She pulled her hand away and stared at it curiously. The tears were not red like blood but silvery and transparent.

Her vision flashed and the tears became blood on her hands.

Lucy, aghast, yanked her hand from her vision and threw herself facedown onto the pillow. The pillow soaked up the moisture on her face and around her eyes.

Kohta only stood there, watching on with horror and surprise.

She cried tears.

She cried blood.
