Understanding Death

Notes: This story takes place when Sakura is three years old and Touya is ten. Italics indicate flashbacks.

Disclaimer: Cardcaptor Sakura belongs to CLAMP and Kodansha, all I own is this fic idea.

Warnings: Themes of suicide (although she really doesn't know what she's doing)

Sakura glanced around the room. Why was everyone crying? And why was her mother sleeping in that wooden box?

She didn't know many of the people around her besides her father and brother. Glancing around again, some of the people she saw were an elderly man with a mustache and beard. He seemed to be comforting a woman with short brown hair who was crying rivers of tears. There was also a young girl about Sakura's age with long, dark hair standing next to the woman. She also looked rather sad.

Sakura looked back towards her father. He wasn't crying, but his eyes were filled with sadness.

"Daddy?" she asked. "What's going on?"

"I'll explain when we get home," he replied.

The car pulled into the driveway. Everyone got out and took off their shoes in the doorway. Sakura and Fujitaka sat on the couch.

"Sakura," Fujitaka began. "Your mother is dead."

"Dead?" Sakura questioned. "What's that?"

"Death is when a person leaves this world forever."

"Will she come back?"

"No, she can't." Sakura's eyes began to water. "However, her spirit is still alive and still loves you dearly."

"But...."

"Daddy?" Sakura asked. "Why is mommy staying in this big building?"

"She's very ill, Sakura," Fujitaka answered.

"Will she ever come home?"

"Of course she will."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

"...You promised that she'd come home from the hospital, and she didn't," Sakura said between sobs. Fujitaka wrapped his arms around her.

"I'm sorry," he said. Sakura continued to cry in his arms.

Sakura laid in her bed. After finding out that her mother was dead and would never come back, she just couldn't get to sleep. She got up, walked over to the kitchen, pulled out the stool, put it in front of the drawers, stood on it, and took out a knife. She had seen this on TV before when the rest of her family had been sleeping. A guy cut himself with a knife and got to visit his dead wife. Afterwards, a magician brought him back. Sakura could visit her mother and have a magician bring her back, too.

Touya was walking downstairs to get a glass of water. Just before he reached the kitchen, he saw Nadeshiko's spirit with a look on her face that told him something awful was about to happen and there was nothing she could do about it. The spirit turned to Touya and pleaded, "Touya, you have to save Sakura!" Getting the message, Touya ran into the kitchen to see Sakura holding a knife over her wrist.

"S-Sakura! What're you doing?!" Touya exclaimed frantically, running over to her.

"I'm going to visit mommy," Sakura replied. "The magician can bring me back."

Touya briefly wondered what she was talking about, but decided that what was happening now was much more important. "Sakura, once you're dead, not even magic can bring you back! Death is a final thing!"

"But...what if she's scared and alone?" Sakura asked sadly.

"Don't worry about her," Touya said, his tone softening a bit. "She's living in a beautiful place in the sky."

Sakura put down the knife. "Really?"

"Yes," Touya replied, "and she wants you to live a happy life while she watches you from up there."

From behind them, Nadeshiko's spirit was relieved that nothing serious had happened. Feeling that everything was alright now, she disappeared back up the trail to Heaven.
