Tonight

Based on the song "Tonight" from the musical "EFX"

Frodo and Sam stand on the dock at the Gray Havens. Frodo has his hands on Sam's shoulders, their foreheads are pressed together. Frodo looks directly into Sam's eyes, though Sam does not hold a constant returned glance.

Frodo: Don't be sad for me.
Everything is how it had to be.
Don't be angry, just be the way you were
Tonight.
Don't ask why or how.
Don't ask more of me than I am now.
Can't we just be the way we always were
Tonight?

Sam pulls away and turns from Frodo.

Frodo: Don't be afraid.
Don't be surprised.
I know with me you never could believe your eyes…

Sam turns back and looks directly at Frodo, trying to hold back tears.

Sam: But you'll come back…
Please swear it's true…

Frodo steps forward and places a hand on Sam's cheek. Tears pour stubbornly down Sam's cheeks.

Sam: I can't escape this need to be with you…
To keep you safe, and near my side,
And I would die again for more than just tonight.

Frodo tries to brush Sam's tears away, but Sam pushes his hand gently away and turns, his arms crossed tightly over his chest.

Sam: Love won't make it right.
Love won't hold me when it's late at night.
I know-you'll go and I'll be left alone
Tonight.

Frodo slowly steps forward. He stands behind Sam, a trembling hand half-raised, hesitantly deciding whether or not to touch him, turn his face from the sea.

Frodo: Don't you Sam: Don't you know
Cry for us I can't let you go.
Can't you see-- Say
There's no good-bye for us.

Sam turns half way back to Frodo and sees that there are tears on his friend's face as well.

Some day, some way
We'll be the way we are
Tonight.

Frodo: Don't be afraid…

Sam falls into Frodo's arms, the two are caught in a final embrace.

I can't escape this need to be with you,
To keep you safe
And near my side
And I would die again for more than just tonight.

Reluctantly, they let go as Gandalf beckons Frodo to the waiting ship.

Frodo: Don't you Sam: Don't you know
Cry for us I can't let you go.
Can't you see Say
There's no good-bye for us.
Some day, some way,
We'll be the way we were…
Tonight…

The ship sails into the distance and remains only a speck on the darkening horizon. Sam tries fruitlessly to brush the ever-flowing tears away with the back of his hand as he waves farewell to the ship and it's passengers.

...end...
