Sam's Lullaby
Sam and Frodo sing to "Tam's Lullaby" from the musical "Miss Saigon"
Sam is lying in bed. It is late at night. A beam of moonlight falls across him. Beside him to left is Rosie, sleeping with her back to him. To his right lies little Frodo-lad, just a few months old. Sam's eyes are wide open. He stares into space… remembering…
Sam: You who I cradled in my arms… you…
Asking as little as you can.
A little snip of a little man.
You know I'd give my life for you.
The scene changes. Frodo is on the beach at night, his eyes focused on the dark abyss of the sea in the direction of the Shire. He sits with his knees pulled up to his chest, arms folded, drawing his cape closer around his shoulders to protect himself from the cold wind blowing through.
Frodo: You didn't ask me to come along… you…
Why should you learn of war or pain?
To be sure you're not hurt again,
I swear I'd give my life for you.
Scene switch to Sam, now sitting up, clutching the blankets to his chest, staring out the window.
Sam: I've tasted love beyond all fear.
I thought you knew… It's love that brought you here.
It was one perfect night,
When the stars burned like new.
I knew what I must do.
Frodo on the beach, reaching a hand towards his home.
Frodo: I gave you a million things I'll never own.
I gave you a world to conquer all alone.
You will be who you want to be. You
Can choose whatever heaven grants.
As long as you can have your chance,
I swear I'll give my life for you.
Sam picks up little Frodo-lad, who yawns and looks at his father sleepily. Sam holds his son on his lap looking at him.
Sam: Sometimes I wake up
Reaching for him…
I feel his shadow brush my head,
But there's just moonlight on my bed.
Sam sets Frodo-lad back down and covers him with blankets, then sings as if posing a question to the babe.
Sam: Was he a ghost? Was he a lie,
Who made my body laugh and cry?
Now by my side the proof I see:
His little one, my only son…
Sam turns his face to the moonlight, tears glistening on his cheeks.
Sam: Bring him to me…!
Frodo stands on the beach shivering, tears streaming down his face. He holds his hands to the sky, looking very determined.
Frodo: You will be who you want to be! You
Can choose whatever heaven grants!
Split-screen, Sam stands at the window with his hand pressed against it.
Frodo/ As long as you can have your chance
Sam: I swear I'll give my life for you.
Sam: No one can stop what I must do…!
Both: I swear I'll give my life for you!!
...end...
