"Daddy, can I help make the dough?" Caroline asked.
"Sure thing. Let's get going." Adrian wrapped his arm around her shoulders and led her into the kitchen.
"What dough?" Beverly asked. She stroked Jakob's face.
Marti stole a kiss. "We do this ornament every few years. Our thumb prints. We haven't done it in a while, but we have so many new members."
"Mommy, I'm tired." Katerina said into Ivanna's shoulder.
"I know, baby. We'll go to bed in a few minutes." Her mother assured her.
After a short time, Adrian popped his head into the living room. "Josh, your family first."
Everyone congregated in the kitchen. Beverly watched as they all pressed their thumbs into the clay Adrian and Caroline had formed. Using a toothpick, Adrian carefully wrote all the names underneath each thumbprint. He wrote the year in the center of each one.
As Marti went off to feed Jakob and Josh and Ivanna took their children up for bed, Sydney and Adrian showed off the previous ornaments.
"The first year we did it was CJ's first Christmas." Sydney explained. "She was so tiny." She rubbed a finger over the ornament. "She was seven months old. And then we did another right before Marti moved away to be with you." She pointed to another.
Adrian indicated another. "This one was Katerina's first Christmas in Utah."
Beverly's eyes landed on a small hand-painted ornament. "Is this Court?"
Adrian smiled. "Yeah. My parents' place, actually."
"It's beautiful." She sighed, leaning closer to get a better look.
"You can have it." He said impulsively. "For your tree with Marti and Jake."
"We can't take." She said.
"Of course you can. It's always been one of Marti's favorites. So take it."
"Remind me when we leave." Beverly said with a smile.
He pulled her into a hug. "You're the greatest thing that ever happened to her."
Beverly patted her father-in-law's back. "She's actually the greatest thing that ever happened to me." She stepped away and looked over at the sound of a baby gurgling. She sighed, "Jake."
Marti gently passed him to her wife's arms. "He's almost asleep, but I think he'd like some Mama time."
"And I'd like some Jakob time." Beverly kissed his small face.
Adrian looked at his watch. "Need to check on those ornaments."
"I'll do it." Sydney walked toward the kitchen.
Adrian called her name softly and she stopped. He pointed up.
She shook her head at the mistletoe. "Of course. Any excuse."
"Like I need an excuse." He strode across the room and grabbed her face. He pressed his mouth to hers.
She broke the kiss and stepped away slightly. "I thought I told you to take that down."
"Why? You know I like it." He grinned and rubbed her back.
She patted his chest. "Put it away. For real this time."
"Oh, I'll put it away." He leaned closer. "Over the bed. Like the center."
She laughed. "You better not."
He reached up and took it down. "Just try to stop me." He dashed up the stairs.
She ran after him and grabbed him around the waist. "Don't you dare."
"I will dare, Sage. Let me go."
"Nope."
Beverly chuckled. "Your parents are ridiculous."
Marti nodded in agreement. "They are. We're going to be like that."
Beverly gave her wife a challenging look. "Oh, are we?"
Marti smoothed a hand over Jakob's head. "I'll fight every day, Bev baby. For you and me. For our son." She leaned in and kissed Beverly slowly.
"Oh, get a room." Adrian called from the stairs. Then he dashed up them, waving the bit of mistletoe in the air as Sydney ran after him.
