A/N: This isn't really set in a specific time frame but it's in season one. The song is from Beauty and the Beast.
Kate picked the fruit off the branches as she clung to the tree. She loved to pick fruit, not only because she was helping out her friends, but because it gave her something to do. She loved nature so much, and this island was full of opportunities. She was also out here to escape her problems. She didn't know how deep it had gotten for her with Jack and Sawyer. It seemed like they were always competing for her, and she didn't like that.
"Hey!"
Kate looked down to see Sawyer looking up at her. "Are you ever going to get off that thing or what?"
"How long have you been watching me?" Kate called down to him as she started her descent.
"Long enough to know that if I were up there I'd have a backache."
Kate rolled her eyes as her feet reached the floor. Sawyer instinctively reached out to steady her, and for a second their eyes met.
He withdrew his hand to his side. "So you got some fruit in there for me?"
"Sure." Kate reached in her backpack and pulled out an apple and handed it to him.
"A apple. That's all you got?"
"Well I have a mango." Kate grinned.
"That will do."
They exchanged fruit, and Kate quickly looked down to conceal the blush that was making its way across her face.
"Kate."
"What?" Kate looked up at him.
"Look over there."
Kate looked to where Sawyer was pointing and gasped. Two squirrels were sitting together on a log, and they both seemed to be playing together.
Kate looked at Sawyer and watched him look at the squirrels. She wondered why he was so mesmerized by them.
There's something sweet
And almost kind
But he was mean and he was coarse and unrefined
And now he's dear
And so I'm sure
I wonder why I didn't see it there before
He looked at her, and she quickly looked away. He smiled as he watched her look at the squirrels.
She glanced this way
I thought I saw
And when we touched she didn't shudder at my paw
No it can't be
I'll just ignore
But then she's never looked at me that way before
Kate fought the shiver running down her back. She watched as one of the squirrels gave the other squirrel an acorn.
"I guess that guy's got his girl covered huh?" Sawyer said.
"Yeah."
They smiled at each other.
New and a bit alarming
Who'd have ever thought that this could be?
True that he's no Prince Charming
But there's something in him that I simply didn't see
"Well I guess we should be getting back to camp. The Doc will be wondering where you went to." Sawyer smiled sadly at Kate.
"I think we can stay out here a while longer." Kate said, and Sawyer grinned at her.
She pulled out her apple, and took a bite out of it as they sat down together.
There may be something there that wasn't there before.
