THE SECOND TO LAST MAN ON EARTH
CHAPTER 1
APRIL 19, 1976- Rising of the Sun
He lazily opened his eyes and looked out the window. The sun was barely coming up. The colors and hues were streaming the sky, like they did every day. He heard the final screams outside, and then stood up. He stepped out of the bathtub that he slept in every night, and walked to the sink. He turned the water on cautiously, then leaned into the basin. His bloodshot eyes swept tiredly over the mirror, first looking into his pupils, then arms. John Weston was a tired boy. His life filled with troubles since his first cry in that hospital many years ago. He put his fingers into the warm water, then took handfuls to his face. Afterwards, he took a clean towel off of the hook and stepped out of his room. John walked down the halls, flipping on the lights. The sudden burst hurt his eyes, but he recovered quickly. John walked into the kitchen, and sat down on a chair. He ran his fingers through his brown hair, and then slammed fists onto the counter. Then John released his grip on the air, and smiled. His eyes darted to the calendar pinned up on the wall next to the counter. He stood up and circled the current day with red marker. "My birthday…" he mumbled, sitting back down, admiring the red circle. He heaved a heavy sigh, and breathed "Thirteen years old today…." He reached out and took a glass off of the pile he had stacked on the counter. He reached out with his other hand and filled the glass with water from the sink. He gulped it down, and placed the cup on the counter. John then stood up, turned around, then headed into the living room. He went and turned on the music; classic. He wondered if anyone really liked that when they were still alive. While Beethoven played, John sat down in his chair and looked at the music player. His eyes blinked a few times, but then remained open. John then closed them, and listened to the calming music in silence. "Well, well…" he whispered, turning his head on the pillow in a comfortable position. "Being the last man on earth… isn't that bad."
