Prologue: A Stir in the Air
There was a week left until Amberwood School for Sorcerers opened its gates and began its school year for both returning and new students. Amberwood was one of the magical schools for the United States, the equivalent to that of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Drumstrong Institute and Beauxbatons Academy of Magic over in Europe. Amberwood wasn't the only magic school in the United States, though, but it was the most prestigious. There was the Vladimir Academy for Magicians in Montana and the Witches & Wizards of the Royal Court out in Pennsylvania, and countless others across the country.
It'd been nearly a decade since the defeat of Voldemort; his reign of fear and supremacy didn't exactly extend over to the United States but there was damage done. But since his defeat, everything all over the world had been relatively peaceful. It was like the peace after the storm.
Jaclyn Terwilliger, however, begged to differ. She could feel a change in the air; something was coming, something terrifying and life altering. She didn't know because of some premonition; she just knew deep in her gut, an instinctual feeling. She spoke to her sister, Alice, about it who laughed and waved her silly fears away. Jaclyn supposed she was right; perhaps, her parents' paranoia had passed onto her, even though their paranoia had been justified with Voldemort out there.
"It doesn't do well to dwell in one's thoughts, especially on a night of the full moon. It's when the dark forces are at their most powerful," comes Malachi Wolfe's voice, startling her out of her reverie.
She whirls around and sees him leaning against the wall, looking up into the clear sky. There's not even one gust of cloud in sight; just the chilly cool air, breezing around them silently.
"Hmm," she hums in consent with his words. Most people would scoff at their assumptions, claiming them as false, but Jaclyn always believed that anything could be possible, whether it was proven or not. And she agreed wholeheartedly with Malachi's words; the full moon was a vulnerable time, for wizards and humans alike, and one needed to proceed with caution.
They stayed there, looking up at the full, gray moon, not saying a word to each other, just basking in the other's presence. Jaclyn always felt like Malachi was the only person who completely understood her without her having to explain. It was nice.
"So, who do you suppose is going to be the unlucky victim that falls off the boats this year?" he asks with a grin. Jaclyn laughs, both of them oblivious to the bright, yellow shape that passes across the moon, shaped like the sun with flaring rays surrounding it , and far away, in a crowded hospital room, a blonde baby girl is born with a strange lily-mark branded upon her cheek.
Sydney Sage was born on February fifth, a full moon quite unlike a regular full moon. Perhaps, it's an omen or perhaps it is her very own guardian angel looking out for her, bringing with it light to cast out the darkness and shadows that will always follow Sydney.
Either way, Sydney is completely unaware of it; until her twelfth birthday that is, when she awakens from a strange and peculiar dream that she's certain wasn't a dream at all, but a memory.
Read and Review? Also, sorry this is so short. It's just a brief, vague introduction. I'll try to update as often as I can (especially since it's Summer) but I make no promises. So bear with me.
