The Game

"What would we be if Duncan never ran away?" Logan asked as they lay in bed together.
Veronica frowned at this. Where did this question come from? Moments ago he was breathing deeply, whispering he loved her over and over again. They were going to be playing this game once again, she knew. It was the endless game where they took turns bruising each other's heart.
She wanted to tell him about the dream of her ideal world, where both of the Kanes were alive and well living in Neptune. In that dream she was with him, because she wanted to be with him.
She knew she should tell him that. But a voice in her head told her that it was her move next and she had to play.
"What would we be if Lilly were alive?" she asked.
And check, she thought as he turned over on his side, not facing her. He got up, unashamed of his nakedness, and went out to the living area of the suite.
She didn't call him back to bed, she knew she should. She just took a deep breath and stared at the colorless ceiling wondering if this would ever end.
She knew they would never give each the answers the other was looking for. It would haunt both of them, wondering if the other was just settling because they could not have what they truly wanted. Those thoughts would continue to haunt them, so they would continue to play the game where they would hurt each. There were no rules to this game, but they both knew one thing about it, there was never a winner, just heart broken victims.
