Seven months after finally getting the courage to leave Leroy and take the kids and live on the Foote plantation, Minnie was finally getting her strength back. She was happy that Mr. Johnny and Ms. Celia agreed to take her kids in. They helped her raise them like they were their own. Johnny paid for the schooling to make sure that they had the best education that they could get.
One day, Minnie, Celia, Johnny, and the kids were all over by the pool, swimming and sipping lemonade. There was a figure that was stumbling down the driveway. Johnny raised his hand to his forehead to try and shield his eyes from the sun and try to identify the person who was walking down the driveway.
They all soon heard a slurred yell, "Minnie, get your ass over here!"
Minnie blanched. Johnny noticed and asked her, "Is that your husband?" She could not speak, She just nodded her head. "Celia, please take Minnie and the children into the house and lock the doors behind you. I will take care of this." Minnie and the kids started walking to the house. Leroy started running faster, trying to catch up to them.
"Celia, make sure to call the cops when you get in the house," Johnny ordered. Celia nodded her head in response. They all got in the house. Celia locked all the doors and Sugar and Minnie made sure that all the windows were locked as well. Celia ushered them all into the main bedroom where they were going to stay to be safe. When the kids were all accounted for, Celia picked up the phone and called the police and told them, "There is an aggressive Negro on the property. We are afraid for our safety. We need help immediately."
"We will be there in ten minutes," the police promised. Those ten minutes were the longest that Minnie had ever waited for. She was never so happy hearing police sirens coming down the driveway. A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door. Minnie jumped, afraid that it was her husband.
"Celia, it's Johnny." Celia opened the door. Behind him were two police officers. "Minnie, I told them everything. They promise to keep you safe, they just need your statement. They will make sure that he stays behind bars for the rest of his days. He won't be able to hurt you or your children ever again."
Minnie took a deep breath. She never really trusted the police, but she wanted to make sure that Leroy could never hurt her again or hurt her children. Celia took the children downstairs and entertained them. Johnny stayed with Minnie for support. She was thankful for that. She was finally able to tell her story and she felt like this was going to be the last time that she would be haunted by her husband.
They had taken Leroy away and he was sent to jail for abuse and trespassing, and swearing in front of women. The police officers assured all of them that he would not be going out of jail any time soon. Minnie knew full well that they were talking only to Celia and Johnny, but she was thankful, nontheless. She finally felt that there was no longer a large threat from her abusive husband. She was glad that she had Ms. Celia and Mr. Johnny to help support her. They all had a drink after the police left to unwind and celebrate. Minnie was forever thankful for Celia and Johnny for everything that they had done for her and her children.
