Authors Note: This was a short drabble I wrote, as a way to express my thought on Marvels Ultimate line, through the eyes of a citizen of that universe. Let's just get this straight, I HATE Ultimate Marvel.
Wrong Turn
It wasnt supposed to be this way.
Somehow, at some point, everything had gone wrong.
The world was so violent, so brutal, so hatefilled. Those who had done nothing wrong except being born different were mercilessly hunted, the ones in power cared nothing for the innocent. "It's for the greater good" they said. "We have to control them" they said. "They're dangerous, they could hurt innocent people. They could take away our power!
The greatest of men were suddenly no more than violent butchers who had never heard of the word justice. A mindless soldier who simply goose-stepped to the words his government said. Captain America was a monster, like any other. "Do as we say Captain, it's for America. Besides, it's your orders". Because that's what a soldier does. He follows orders.
The Avengers were supposed to stand for something… Oh right, I suppose they would have to be called The Ultimates now. Because this is the real world. Where heroes are little better than the villains they fight. Where the state sponsors genocide on one part of the population because the others are afraid of them. I cant belive my tax dollars went to building sentinels.
Not that they are much better. I mean, Magneto is a villain, right? I had some vague memory of a sane man, with a genuine care for his people. I guess they were just delusions. The bloodthirsty maniac who calls himself Magneto now is anything but that. Yeah, I remember reading about all the people he slaughtered. But, most of them deserved it. This is the real world after all.
Nick Fury? Who's that? Hmmm, wasn't he some kind of government agent? Yes, I believe he worked for SHIELD or something or other. Didn't they forcefully draft mutants and other metahumans, because they weren't "authorized"? And I seem to remember reading about that agency imprisoning villains without trial. But hey, who cares, right? This is the real world. We don't need trials, this is America!
Ohhh yes, Spiderman, I remember him. He looked awfully young under that suit though. But still, the government locked him away for a while. I think I read some leaked files on the Internet about that, they wanted to see what made him tick. Plus, he was unauthorized, so it's not like they broke a law by throwing a kid in jail. I think they said they were going to force him to join SHIELD when he turned 18.
Sure am glad I have the folks at SHIELD protecting my country.
I'm really glad this is the real world. Where there is nothing like heroes. Because those are all overrated anyway.
