Friends

***

Cody never said a word. A three week long coma and Cody never said a word. Because they were friends.

They asked him if he'd been attacked, if a mutant had done it. He said he'd just started convulsing. Even when her father came forward, saying that Marie had screamed, that she'd run, he could only say that she must have been scared, that it must have been horrible to have to watch. Despite what had happened, he missed her and wished her the best. Everyone had thought that they'd get married someday, and maybe in a fairer world they would have, but Marie was gone. She'd run, and he doubted they'd ever find her. It was a bitter pill to swallow that his best friend was never coming back, but he'd grown to accept it. She must be killing herself with guilt. He wished she wouldn't, but Cody knew better. He couldn't imagine how difficult it would be, never to touch; and no matter how much control she might gain that's what she would damn herself to. Cody never said a word, not even to his mother. He wanted to protect her.

Because that's what friends did.
