Of all things that begin, there is an end. When she realizes that her end is today, it's already too late. She is dead, only not quite.
It starts like any normal day. And here is where she tries to remember, but can't really.
There's a pink haired girl, she recalls. Tired eyes, with quiet experience. A pouting mouth and a small petite body. Someone who wants to help but never helps; someone who works miracles with her wise eyes of inner strength. Girly.
There's a guidepost – one that stands strong in the wind that blows the wrong way – a sword that protects its master even upon death to return stronger. A small boy, she thinks. Middle school age. Her pride and her pain, although what it means is lost to her now.
There's a child loving old man. Not a pedophile, for sure, but someone nice who acted all tough. He was tall and kind, stern and protecting. In her mind she sees a fan, but it doesn't connect. A savior.
She remembers someone else, too. A vague flash of presence and shining blue eyes. She remembers pressing her face into soft dark tracksuits and the scent of lemon soap. She remembers sweaty hands and a vague feeling of promise.
So she knows she's been alive somehow, in a different place, in a different way. She knows that there's a reason why her classmates expect her to fall asleep in class; a reason why her instinct is to protect her lower back. There's a reason why her guest room smells like lemon and why the man she buys popsicles from for the summer festival looks familiar, and always sad. There's a reason why all her requests to the god of education are granted and why she's so good at Jungle Savate even though she doesn't recall ever practicing it. There's a reason for it all.
Only she doesn't remember.
