She'd known he was coming back, she'd probably known it before he'd
accepted it. It was more than the him in her head telling her that, it was
more like a feeling...a certainity. There was no doubt in Rogue's mind that
today was the day that Logan would return.
Kitty noticed the difference in her first. Of course, that was logical, afterall, she was the first to see her. It was a small difference, but a difference none the less. Rogue was smiling, not grinning, but definitely not being her usual stone faced self. Her eyes were a little less guarded and her lips curved upwards slightly. It was a refreshing change and Kitty refused to mention it for fear of losing it.
Scott noticed it next. Since Logan's last touch, Rogue had been distant from him. He accepted it because he knew it was from the Logan in her head. But today, she approached him first. Giving him a small nod, she sat across from him and grabbed the discarded newspaper. She rejected the offered sports page with a shake of her head and a smile. And it was then that he realized she was different.
Jean discovered it next. Seconds before the Professor did. They had been doing a routine scan and Rogue's mind was calm for the first time since she arrived. With wide eyes, Jean watched the Professor as he sensed it. He kept his eyes closed for a few seconds longer and then quietly stated, "Finally."
Jean, completely confused, simply smiled and nodded in agreement.
But it was Logan who realized the extent of Rogue's difference. It was Logan who found her sitting casually on the porch with a self-satisfied smile. It was Logan who felt no pull as Rogue placed a soft kiss on his cheek. But it was Marie who explained the difference.
"Happiness can overcome the strongest difficulties, even genetic ones."
And it was Logan who stated simply, "Love doesn't mind the strongest difficulties. I loved you untouchable and I love you now."
