A Nighttime Phone Call

"Hello?" Jackie said groggily as she reached for the ringing phone one night.

Nick groaned, thinking it was the lab, although he thought it was odd that they didn't call his cell phone.

"Hi mama." Came a small, happy little voice.

"Johnna?" Jackie asked shocked.

"Hi mama." The little girl repeated.

How was Johnna calling their house, was she in her room or had someone taken her and was now insisting that the little girl call home. Jackie and Nick both bolted out of bed and raced into the little girl's room.

To both of their relief she was safely in bed, holding Jackie's cell phone up to her ear as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

"Johnna, how did you get mommy's phone?" Jackie asked her.

"Me find it." She replied.

"You found it? Where?" Jackie asked.

"Right dere." The child said pointing to a spot on her blanket.

"It must have fallen out of my pocket when I was tucking her in." Jackie said as she turned her attention to Nick.

"Yeah and she must have just happened to dial our house number." Nick responded.

"Oh no, I wonder who else she called?" Jackie said as she took the phone away from the child and immediately scrolled to the dialed section on her phone.

"Oh good, she didn't call anyone else." Jackie told Nick.

"Alright sweetheart, it's time to go back to sleep." Jackie said as she turned her attention back to Johnna.

Jackie waited until the little girl was comfortably under the covers and then she leaned over and gave her a kiss goodnight and told her she loved her.

"Me love you mama." The little girl responded.

"Thanks you sweet girl." Jackie told her with a smile before she turned around and walked out of the room.

Nick too told the child he loved her and then leaned over and gave her a kiss goodnight.

"Love you dada."

"Thank you, keep saying that and you just might get a car for your sixteenth birthday." He told his little girl before leaving her room.

Nick went back into his own room.

"Doesn't it just melt your heart when the kids tell you they love you?" He asked Jackie, who was putting her cell phone safely on her nightstand.

"It sure does." She agreed with a smile.

"Goodnight Jacks." He said as he crawled into bed.

"Night hon." She said as she too crawled back into bed.

Soon the happy couple was in dreamland.
