She drove him mad with emotions he shouldn't feel for her. She was everything he wasn't and everything he was taught to hate in his life. They were by no means friends. In the end, they were merely pawns on opposing sides of the war. He was raised with the ideals of a pureblood. She was raised with the mind of a muggle and trained to be a witch. In the end, he was the personification of tradition, legacy. She was everything his family feared. She was 'change'.
When they first met, the only thing he remembered about her was her hair. It wasn't her voice, although that changed soon after. It was her hair that remained with him for weeks after the first meeting. It wasn't the fact it reminded him of a bush, although that was a side thought; it was the color. It wasn't just simple brown. There were mixes of amber, golden blonde, russet, chocolate brown, all sorts of color to form her wild hair. All the curls and waves of her hair, it captivated his attention, his interest. However, he couldn't tell anyone of his interest in the Mudblood's hair, of all things. So he insults her, called it a bush of all things.
As the years passed, he noticed other traits of her. Her eyes would light up with fire when she was angry. Her lips formed the softest of smiles when she was happy. Her voice softened from the high pitch whine that it was to an alluring alto. Even when he teased her, insulted her, he was always paying attention to her. Potter was useful in those situations. He was always there, an excuse for him to come over, just to insult them. Hermione Granger might have been a Mudblood, but Draco Malfoy couldn't help but noticed her.
As much as he noticed her, he knew she never gave him the slightest of mind. Of course the only thing she cared about was her grades, Potter, and the damn Weasel. She never noticed his gaze, too preoccupied with the book before her, too focused on the task before her to even notice he was watching her. It was both a curse as well as a blessing. While she researched, he watched her. As long as she was focused on other things, he could watch her to his heart's content.
It wasn't enough though. The war was inevitable; she will be in the midst of it all along with her friends. He will be on the other side, destroying the world as he knew it to help the Monster to create a new one. She was strong, he knew she was. She will survive the war. No matter how the war will end, whether he dies or not, he needed her to survive.
As long as she survived, as long as she lived, Draco was content. Potter will take care of her, The Weasel will learn to love her. She will eventually forget about him and move on.
He was nothing but a bully to her. She was nothing but his single desire in life. In the end, no matter what happens, she will never be within arm reach. He will never be able to hold her. There was no future for them.

A/N: This wasn't exactly what I had in mind for Draco and Hermione. I wanted to do a happy ending but at this very moment, I couldn't give them the ending they deserve.
