That night a cold wind was blowing on the hills, that kind of ferocious wind which crawls through every clothing and bites your skin, no matter how many layers of cloth you may wear.

Frodo had given up sleeping and now he was doing his best to avoid freezing, huddling up the closest he could to Sam's body, who instead was sleeping blissfully.
At once, the hobbit heard his friend whispering something in his sleep.
"Mine... it's mine..."
Frodo strained his ears in concern. "My..."
His what? Was Sam dreaming what he...?
"...my... preciousss..."
"SAM!" Frodo screamed histerically. Poor Sam jumped up grabbing his sword. "What's going on?!" he screamed back, still in a haze. Frodo was staring at him with his eyes wide opened. Well, let's say, wider then usual. (*)
"What were you dreaming?!" Frodo asked, accusingly. Sam turned pale.
"W-why are you asking me, Mr. Frodo?"
"I heard you talk in your sleep... you dreamed about it, didn't you?"
Sam though he really should start to worry. "Dreamed what, Mr. Frodo?" he said, while imagining with horror all the things he could've said in his sleep. He prayed it was none of them.
"Don't pretend you don't know, Sam! You want it!" Frodo said, getting angrier and angrier.
Sam was trapped. Frodo obviously understood. "I-I don't..."
"Oh yes you do! You want to take it from me!"
Sam was wordless. Mr. Frodo never spoke like that.
"Admit it! You're going to jump me while I sleep and take it!"
Sam widened his eyes, starting to get upset. "Oh, this is too much, Mr. Frodo, I would never do that!"
"Yes you would!" Frodo yelled, slamming his fist on the ground in anger. "Don't deny that! I heard you, you know? Your precious! The Ring was given to me, me, me and me only! Don't you ever make me repeat that!"
And he turned the other way, picked, holding the Ring's necklace possessively.
Samwise Gamgee gave the most relieving sigh of relieve of his whole life and went back to sleep.

Next to him, lay the one and only precious he ever knew.

(* referring, of course, to movie's Frodo, played by Elijah Wood, to whom mother nature gave the wider eyes I've ever seen.)
