Forever

A young boy stared out of his window, steely blue eyes as overcast as the gloomy weather raging beyond the glass. His heavy head was propped up with one arm as he continued to watch and wait for something he knew he wasn't going to see. But Sora was a good boy – and an even better boyfriend – and he had promised her he'd wait until the end…
"No, not until the end," he had told the red-head, his arms wrapped around her so tightly she was in danger of snapping in two, "Always."
Everybody told him he was crazy, that he should give up, that she wasn't coming back. It didn't matter how long he stayed locked in his room looking out his window for her pretty red head or bright clothes or even brighter smiles because she wasn't coming back. She was never coming back She couldn't come back. But he'd always look down at the Thalassa shell charm she gave him, glinting on his desk in the light of his cheap, plastic lamp, and remember…
She never even had to ask him if he meant his promise because he was Sora, and Sora was the most honest person she knew. She trusted him that much. She'd trust him with her life. "No… Not until the end," she agreed, hugging Sora just as hard as he hugged her, "Always."
When he found out she was dead ("but it must have been a relief for the poor girl, being so very ill for so very long. She looked peaceful when we found her, Sora," the doctors and nurses had said) he hadn't cried. He hadn't had a breakdown. He hadn't made a scene. He just sat in his room and continued to wait. He was a good boy – and an even better boyfriend – and he was going to keep his promise.
"Sora, why are you doing this to yourself?" his best friend, Riku, had asked – and not for the first time, either. "You know she had cancer and you can't bring her back no matter what you do or how much love her. So… What are you still waiting for?" And his eyes had sparkled with tears, afraid to hear the answer because he knew what it was going to be…
"Death, Riku," Sora whispered, eyes still staring helplessly through the torrential rain that poured from the grey clouds, still trying to catch one last glimpse of red hair and her violet eyes and her beautiful, heart-breaking smile. "I'm waiting so I can be with her again. And if I can only see her in heaven… Then that's what I must do."
She never had to ask him if he was telling the truth, because Sora always kept his promises, and not just until his slow, painful end.
"Not until the end, Kairi… Always…"
