A/N: Post Grave Danger. Some drabble. Nick/Mia. I'm really not sure how I came up with this. It's kind of creepy. I hope you enjoy it.
Disclaimer: CSI is not mine. If it were, Grissom and Sara would be together, Warrick and Catherine would be together, and I'd probably be laughing meniachaly right now instead of posting this fic. Yeah... CSI doesn't belong to me andI am in no way affiliated with Anthony Zuiker, Jerry Bruckheimer, or CBS.
Perfection
He could see her, and I could see him. The longing in his eyes as he watched her work. The wish that he could speak to her, I gave him the push. At least, I tried to, I wanted him to smile again. He hadn't smiled in so long, and I thought that maybe she could make her smile. I was right, kind of. He smiled, at her, and she smiled back. But I didn't realize how much it would hurt me to finally see that smile.
"Hey, Mia. What're you got for me?" Nick asked. Mia looked up, concern flashing through her eyes. She had been worried along with everyone else, Nick knew that. He wasn't sure how he could ease everyone's fears for his well being, but he had to try. He took the folder that Mia handed him and flashed her a smile.
A real smile, and Mia smiled back.
It wasn't the fact that he had found someone to smile at, he hadn't. He'd found a reason to smile. It was his way of showing us that he was all right. but did he have to smile at her first? I had been waiting for that grin to be flashed, my way, for so long. It sounds selfish, but I just wanted to be sure that he really was okay.
At least, that's the reason that I've been giving myself. Now, as I watch them talk. As I watch him smile. I wish that I hadn't given him that shove. I blame myself entirely. That moment in the locker room will haunt me from today onward.
"Hey, Greggo," Nick said. I leaned back against the lockers as he bantered back and forth with Greg. He had insisted on his parents going home after his ordeal, and I had tried to convince him otherwise. They were worried about him, and so were we.
"Nicky, I've got some advice for you," I said after Greg left. Nick looked at me, confused. "Find a shoulder, Nicky."
"Hey, guys," Nick said. He walked into the break room and poured himself a cup of coffee. Sara and Greg were playing a game of cards and Warrick was on the phone. Nick patted Warrick's shoulder and sat down at the table.
"You wanna play?" Greg asked, dealing Nick in before he could answer. Nick nodded and took a sip of his coffee.
"Who's he talking to?" Nick asked, glancing back at Warrick.
"Probably Cath, she's been antsy all week," Sara said. Nick nodded, chuckling a little. A real laugh. A sharp buzzing sound filled the room and Nick glanced at his pager.
"I've got to go," he said. He got up, leaving his full coffee cup and confused friends behind.
I just wanted him to be happy.
"What is it?" Nick asked as he entered the lab. Mia looked up from the table and handed Nick another folder.
"There were two blood samples under her nails. One male and one female," Mia said. Nick sighed.
"This night's never gonna end."
Just wanted him to smile.
"Hey, Mia," Nick said, Stopping at the door. Mia looked up at him, confusion in her eyes. "You wanna grab a drink after shift?
Mia smiled.
Nick Smiled
"Yeah, that sounds great."
Just wanted him to be mine.
"Find a shoulder."
"I'll try, Griss."
I meant mine.
